Default The Loving Cup

Why was it called a loving cup? Why not trophy?

Here's an explanation:

A large, two-handled cup, often made of silver, that may take many forms. In the past, at weddings, banquets, or meetings, a loving cup might be shared by a number of persons for ceremonial drinking, symbolizing friendship and unity. Loving cups are often given as trophies to winners of games or other competitions. The French coupe de mariage is a somewhat shallow form of loving cup.

I think that Ricky refers to it as a "trophy" (with his accent "Truffy") and I think it was Ethel who first referred to it as a "Loving cup (stuck on your head."). In any case we learn it's not something you EVER put your TUR-TLE in!

As Lucy proved, they're nice to look at but make BAD hats, unless you have a good sense of touch, LOL!

Did you ever notice the design on the face of that loving cup? It looks like there's two little holes around where Lucy's eyes would be so she could actually see while wearing it!

Yeah, I noticed the eye holes. That thing must have been pretty difficult to act in even being able to see a little. That scene where she acts nonchalant and reads the newspaper in the subway is hilarious. You can tell the passengers are really laughing, not acting!

I don't think there were actual holes in the cup. I think Larry means that when the cup is inverted onto Lucy's head, the design looks like "eyes" where her eyes would really be. I think she acted that scene as handicapped as she was with the cup blinding her peripheral vision.

Actually, what I meant was there were eye holes in the cup so in real life Lucy could see while she was wearing it, but they put the design on the face to make the holes inconspicuous. I agree that even though there were holes in the cup it still must have been difficult for Lucy to see where she was going because she couldn't have had much peripheral vision with that thing on her head.

The things she was willing to do to get laughs were amazing!

Larry I just checked this out in the "Lucy Book". There were tiny holes cut into the decorative flowering on the cup because Lucy was claustrophobic! I can't blame her!! We learn something new every day!

Yeah, I noticed the eye holes too. It was pretty obvious. I love the subway scene and the cop scene and pretty much the whole episode.

I have always noticed that. I could easily tell it was made so that Lucy can see what she was doing. It wasn't until later it had to also do with her claustophobia. The design was funny looking. And the scene where the commuters are laughing at Lucy is hilarious.
