Oh No First, they came for our light-bulbs...

http://green.yahoo.com/blog/forecast...er-do-you.html

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am sick to death of these enviro-freaks trying to control what we do and telling us how we "should" be living. In fact, I am putting a screen-saver on my computer right now!

I swear, these people aren't going to be happy until we are all living in caves and using grass to wipe our butts.
...Of course, they won't want us to use fire to warm ourselves either as we are freezing in the cave, because that would make some smoke and would also increase our "carbon-footprint".
I'd like to give them another kind of footprint right on their backside.

I was listening to talk radio one night and the guy on there was complaining about the movie stars who keep harping on going green, but they want you to drive your car and use the gas and go see their movies in the theater!!

I have to admit I don't really do anything to go green, except recycle my glass & plastics. I've heard of cities not allowing bottled water because people were just throwing away the bottles instead of recycling!! Give me a break!!

why do you need your monitor on if you aren't using it?

- it seems like a pretty painless way to save energy - just set it to shut off after so many minutes instead of going to a screensaver, or have it go to the screensaver first then shut off after so many minutes.

I think that a big part of what they are saying in the article is that there are a lot of companies with hundreds or thousands of computers running 24 hours a day - most of that time with the monitors and screen saver on and no one using them, and that is just wasting power for no reason.

What exactly are screen-savers saving our screens from anyway?

I think the main problem with our society is our very lively-hood is grounded on unsustainable, non-renewable resources. We take and take and take and just expect to be able to keep on taking. Waste is a massive part of our everyday lives. More people come into this world, more pollution and not much thought into the future. Food, fuel, life becomes too expensive, society falters. Tiny baby steps in the right direction are too small to count.

It's easy to ignore our future. To focus on the now and scoff at those who would warn us of the error of our ways.

I'm not saying that environmental fanatics are right, but anti-environmental fanatics are very wrong, indeed.

So much is lost everyday. Give some thought into what you can save. It won't hurt anyone. Smaller landfills, smaller bills, greater resources, can only benefit everyone in the long run.

Problem with this society(most societies, actually) is that we simply don't think long-term. And that can only be disastrous.

To be fair the environmentalists have been successful in cleaning up the air. Way back in the early 70's my husband and I were driving into Washington DC and our eyes started burning badly. And driving through Saginaw and Bay City Mich. there was a lot of smog. Since then the air and waterways have improved immensely. But as usual they take a good thing way too far. Example; Try to buy a good toilet in the US anymore. These stupid water saving types don't save water. When I flush I hold the flusher down until more water comes in . If I didn't I am left with yucky brownish residue in my bowl. I have a well so I use all of the water that I need!

And it would all be for the piddly amount of CO2 the company in the article "claims" it will lessen(If you click the link within the article, you'll find alot of "they claim" and "they think" about how much of a difference it will make, with no facts to back it up).

What gets me is those energy efficient curly light bulbs. Supposedly mercury is so poisonous that you can't find a mercury fever thermometer in a drugstore anymore. In fact, I think that Chicago even passed a law banning their sale. Now we are supposed to replace billions of incadesant light bulbs with these curly ones, each of which has a little bit of mercury........

I don't have a problem with saving energy, per se. I do however have a problem with these people telling us how we should live and then using the government to force us to live how they want us to live.

As for not thinking long-term, I wish they would have thought more long-term before mandating the use of those stupid flourescent light bulbs, which will cause more enviromental problems than they will solve.

I don't see anything wrong with that. Its not as if they are making people do things that they don't want to so. You can choose to do it or not.

Maybe positive thinking could help with the environmental problem.

I'm a New Ager and have one of the things that a lot of New Agers believe is that people create their own realities through their thoughts and beliefs. I'm reading the Seth books now by Jane Roberts (Jane Roberts was a medium who channelled the entity Seth in the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s before she died in 1984.) I find them very interesting and Seth explains in detail about how our ideas, beliefs and thoughts create our circumstances.

If we could direct our thoughts and beliefs to believing that the environment is safe and clean - then perhaps it would become that way.

I do think there is something to this positive thinking. On the occasions that I've really tried it, it has yielded positive results.
