Sanford And Son-Lamont was mean and impatient with Fred the first season and wasn't really that funny until season 2.
Three's company-The second season is where the characters were established and the actors got comfortable in their characters.

The Facts of Life--- The addition of Jo to the cast and the paring down of the cast helped this show find its creative footing.

Designing Women--- By this time ratings were up and the writers had sort of found their groove and had started to define the characters more.

E.R.---The addition of Kerry Weaver to the cast gave the show a central source of tension for the characters to focus on and to drive story.

On this, I must respectfully disagree. The cutting of the cast in half damaged the show, as seen by the fact that the writers kept trying to add random new characters: it was as if they realized they had cut too many characters out, and were trying to find someone who "fit". But very few of those characters lasted long. You can also tell the writers erred in cutting the cast because pretty soon they were making the main characters do things they would never have done (like Jo suddenly knowing how to play the piano).

I definitely agree with you on this one. The characters needed time to find their voices.
