Default 'According to Jim' to return with Penny Marshall directing

Now that we've come to grips with the fact that According to Jim is actually going to return for another breathtaking season — its eighth! — on ABC, we have some other news to report: Hollywood veteran Penny Marshall (A League of Their Own) has agreed to lend a hand in the directing department. She may helm a few episodes when the sitcom starring Jim Belushi and Courtney Thorne-Smith (pictured) returns mid-season — if not sooner, should one of ABC's new or returning shows falter this fall. Jim already has a head start; it is currently shooting episode five of the new season.

Though the family comedy isn't exactly breaking Nielsen records (its five telecasts last winter averaged only 5.3 million viewers), According to Jim has value in syndication, and an extra season can only add to the company coffers. And Belushi shows no signs of fatigue. In fact, the actor made headlines at the beginning of the 100-day writers strike last November when he decided to continue production on his sitcom, even though his writers were walking the picket line and the rest of TV had pretty much shut down. No, Belushi didn't step up to write the show he also executive produces; he had five scripts in hand that had yet to be shot.

The show really doesn't even compete anymore. I think the only reason it keeps getting renewed is because its the only sitcom ABC has and it 's more episodes for syndication.

How is Penny Marshall directing "According to Jim" going to make the show any better? Am I missing something here?

I am sooooo in the minority here. I love ATJ. It is literally the last sitcom on a major network that I love.

ABC should have kept George Lopez so it could pair it with ATJ. It's really all alone over at ABC because all their other sitcoms are single camera comedies. I never watched it regularly like I did GL but from what I saw it was a pretty good show.

I agree. GL was shafted. GL's ratings on N@N prove what a hot show it really is.

I love Penny Marshall. According to Jim is a great show, although I don't watch it like I used to. I may check this episode out! A bit of "Six Degrees" going on here don't you think? According to Jim being directed by Penny Marshall who was on Laverne and Shirley with Cindy Williams who directed "Father of the Bride in which Kimberly Williams (of According to Jim) stars? Cool, huh?

I heard somewhere that Kimberly Williams Paisley is no longer part of the show. Is that true?
