Music American Top 40 w/Casey Kasem

Did anyone else grow up listening to this show? I would listen to it every weekend. I was around 12 years old (1977) when I first caught the show on the radio. I couldn't wait to find out what song would hit number one. I remember the long-distance dedications as well. Though at times they were so corny, some of them were indeed touching and meaningful.

On XM radio they rebroadcast those shows. It has been a while since I heard it on there, I haven't checked lately to see if they still air it. I caught it a few times and heard the ATop40 from 1978 and 1980. It brought back so many memories.

I started listening in 1977, The local station gave away the records each week after the broadcast. The first one I recall listening to had Andy Gibb's "I Just want to Be Your Everything" at #1. For years I listened to both A.T. 40 and American Country Countdown with Bob Kingsley. I quit listening to A.T. 40 when Shadoe Stevens took over.

Cool

I didn't listen to it much, but my brother did, writing down every song and their position on a piece of paper. I always used listen to the radio and depended on the "luck of the draw" hoping for a good song. I still do today for the most part.

Every Saturday morning Dayton's WMMX "Mix 107.7" replays an old "American Top 40" from the 1980s between the hours of 6 and 10. It's awesome hearing songs you never hear on the radio anymore, particularly the ones that never made the top ten. Did you know Wayne Newton had a song called "Years" back in 1980? It never got higher than #35.

Last summer while traveling in Wisconsin I had the luck of finding a retro Top 40 from July 27, 1974! (I sent a postcard to Mix 107.7 and told the station of my discovery!) I can't remember the station, but I'm pretty sure it was based out of La Crosse. I remember hearing "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" by Steely Dan, "On And On" by Gladys Knight and the Pips, "Rock Your Baby" by George McCrae (which had fallen out of the #1 spot), and a few songs I had never heard before from Joni Mitchell and Mac Davis.

XM still does replay them on Channel 7 and 8. The 80s are on once on the weekend and then again Thursday night at 10pm E/7pm P; the 70s are on once on the weekend and on Wednesday nights, 10pm E/7pm P.
