Default iPods half full of illegal tracks

Posted Mon 16 Jun 3:53PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Research conducted by the University of Hertfordshire has uncovered that 48% of the music stored on the average digital music player has been downloaded illegally. The figure rises to almost 80% amongst teenagers. The extent of illegal downloading by one of the largest survey of youth music ownership has shocked the industry, which is struggling to cope with declining CD sales.

Former Undertones front man Fergal Sharkey and now Chief Executive of British Music Rights said "I was one of those people who went around the back of the bike shed with songs I had taped off the radio the night before. But this totally dwarfs that, and anything we expected." His comments certainly seem to reflect a growing trend, as CD sales declined by 10% in 2007.

The study also shows:

63% of people illegally download

Just 15% of respondents are persuaded not to upload because of the risk of getting caught

95% engage in some form of copying

http://new.uk.music.yahoo.com/blogs/...age=3#comments

as much as it is a problem, there are more serious crimes taking place in society such as drugs, murder, rape, abuse compared to something like illegal downloading. besides, there is a reason why mp3 players and i pods were created in the first place, and it is for downloading tracks off the internet, not just ripping them off CDs and transferring them on your mp3/i pod. if cds weren't so damn expensive to purchase in the first place, then people wouldn't be resorting to downloading off various sites, such as limewire for instance. your views on this

besides, its just music at the end of the day. the music industry are stinking rich as it is. and yet they seem to care more about making money than the types of records we like to listen to

That's exactly what I was thinking - like they really need to make more money than they already have. And maybe more people would actually buy the music off the internet if it wasn't so expensive - $1 a song is hardly worth it when you can download it illegally

also, in some instances when you buy a cd- i.e an album of an artist and it has say 13 tracks, and yet he/she doesn't some of them on the cd, by downloading he/she can choose which ones they like. besides what's the point shelling out 13 dollars or pounds on an album that has 5, 6 tracks you don't like on there, when you can pick and choose for less than that?

the music in the charts is crap nowadays- the music industry should do something about that than worry about something like losing money. and anyway music should be about music- not making money and being greedy, which the music industry is

Ever the pessimist! Couldn't the headline have been "iPods half full of legal music?"

100% of the music on my iPod is legal. The University of Hertfordshire can suck it.

actually i think iTunes has really risen in popularity over the last few years while illegal downloading is going down. people should just ask people to give them $50 iTunes gift cards so the music from iTunes is free anyway. thats what i do : o

i read how file sharing programs like limewire are illegal, and yet the one i use to download my songs is a legitimate copy. when my brother bought it it came in a box with a manual and it was a piece of software that you would save on your desktop. if these so called programs are illegal then WTH are some of them sold in electronic stores?

I like itunes, but I hate how you can't burn their songs on your real one player. You have to use itunes player to do this. I had to transfer my entire library of songs (over 3000) so when I burned CD's for my boyfriend, I can put some of the itunes songs along with the ones from my real one player library. What a friggin' headache. Thank God I have my iPod so I don't have to do that but my boyfriend prefers his CD's to use in his car. It is annoying having two library of songs on my computer.

i live in the uk, and so he bought his copy off one of the specialist computer shops in london. i think that the music industry are naive to think that they can detect every single person who are downloading songs of bearshare, limewire etc and send them to jail. millions of people are doing it around the world and so what are the chances of them catching them? 1 to a 100 i'd say. besides, i cannot believe how cynical the likes of the music industry are? are they going to do anything about stopping child porn and internet sites that encourage violence, people to take their own lives or sexual assault for example? No they aren't and no they won't

well i agree that prosecuting people for something stupid like illegal downloading is dumb, but i still think iTunes is a better alternative to illegal downloading. not only is it much easier and safer, if you buy a song from iTunes it actually supports the artist, whereas if you just download it doesn't.
