By Simon Reynolds, Entertainment Reporter Dustin Hoffman has revealed that he was the unlikely first choice to play John Rambo in First Blood. Speaking to Extra, the Rain Man actor claimed that he was approached by producers about playing the role before Sylvester Stallone. He said: "I was the first one to be asked to do Rambo, but it was a little too much violence." The 70-year-old also admitted to turning down Richard Dreyfuss's role in Close Encounters Of The Third Kind: "I didn't realise you never turn down a master at his craft, which is Steven Spielberg." Hoffman added that the one role he would have liked to have been offered was James Bond. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/a...own-rambo.html |

It certainly would have been a different movie if Dustin Hoffman was Rambo.
According to the IMDB, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Al Pacino, and John Travolta were also considered for the role of Rambo. |

I can totally envision McQueen or Eastwood as Rambo. Pacino, Travolta and Hoffman, no. Sorry.

After seeing John Travolta as Vince in Pulp Fiction, I can see him as a Rambo type.

I don't see it with Hoffman, and I'm glad it didn't happen. Irene, I'm with you on Travolta. He plays a tough guy very well. Face/Off and Swordfish are just two other movies besides Pulp Fiction where he showed that he's more than just a pretty face. Travolta is a very versatile actor. He can make you laugh, cry and instill fear. Of course, he's one hell of a dancer too.

I think they made the right choice. I can't see Hoffman as Rambo. Eastwood might have been interesting though.
