they had friends over in to days episode, And they are seen outside of the apartment when they went to Kimberly's school and to Portland

I think they paid too much attention to Arnold, it was really the Arnold show. They didn't really have that many episodes that focused around Kimberly or Willis. I think that, they should have given everyone equal time. They just focused on the cute one.

I was just watching DS and thought, "Gee, Arnold gets so much airtime." How funny is that? Also I wondered how did this show come abt? I mean, whose idea was it to make these two black boys become the children of a rich, white man? Were there no other concepts that could have worked without making these kids the children of a white man? Would it have been so bad to see them be black kids in a black home with a mother and/or father?

I don't know if that would have worked with out making the black couple look as if they are stuck up rich black people. I doubt that show would have made it.

I guess the point was to show an interracial family, which I'm sure was pretty rare on TV back in those days (probably pretty rare now, too). It also added conflict - a black family adopting black kids wouldn't have had as much conflict as a white man with black kids.

How abt a father and mother (something along the lines of Cliff and Claire Huxtable) adopt these kids. The parents are well-to-do or are least working and raising these two kids who have been poor all their lives. I am sure there would have been an audience for that. It worked for Fresh Prince.

I think they were trying to cross that whole racial/cultural barrier. Back then (and even now) I think that it was so far fetched that a single white man would adopted to black boys from Harlem. I only know of one white couple who have actually adopted 3 black kids.

For some reason I just don't think that DS would have worked if Mr. D was black.

I actually really like the first season. It's not golden like the middle seasons were, but Mrs. Garrett is so much fun to watch. She was so much better than Adelaide or Pearl. She cracks me up, especially in that episode with the new landlord (Steve Martin) who was wanting to evict them because of Arnold. The way she kept insulting him "Oh I had no idea she was human!" when refering to his wife.

Would DS work if it were about a rich black man adopting white kids? (oh you can see the protests now) or how about a family adopting Chinese orphans--which is revelant because you do see a lot of foreign babies getting adopted here in the US.

I agree it was something different for THAT TIME, now 30 years later maybe someone can think of the reverse, white kids living with a black family-lol
