Default Back to the Hawaii episodes--AGAIN!!

Dang TV Land is so messed up with its scheduling of The Jeffersons!

I wonder if Mike Evans and Berlinda Tolbert felt slighted because they were not a part of the Hawaii episodes?

Good question. I wonder why they were excluded.

well I took it as Lionel and Jenny being a married couple with their own lives and it wasn't really a need for them to be in hawaii. Florence didn't need to be there either-lol

I'm not asking about the characters--just if the actors felt slighted--I know I would!

And why not Florence? Shoot, Alice on TBB got to go on the family trips

The Jeffersons trip was more a romantic getaway, the trip the bradys took was a family trip which is why Alice went. That's why I never understood why Florence couldn't stay home and entertain men while the jeffersons were away

The storyline had that Florence was on vacation, but couldn't afford to go anywhere, so Louise surprised her with a ticket. That's how and why she went to Hawaii.

Florence was so lucky that Louise had no friends besides her and Helen. Otherwise she would never have gotten invited to Hawaii and gotten included on so much of what those rich ladies did. Louise needed to get out more!

But seriously, it is wonderful that Florence came along. Marla Gibbs was brilliant and the writers/producers knew they had gold there. I think the "Florence's Problem" episode where Florence considers suicide was touching and brilliant and gives some exposition into how The Jeffersoins got so close to Florence-- to the point where she eventually moves in as a live-in domestic.

I still feel that Florence should not have gone to a romantic getaway like Hawaii. Now Atlantic City was Different but not Hawaii

Yes, but since she did manage to go, I have an unrelated question. Why was Florence only interested in black men in Hawaii? Was she not liberal minded enough to look with interest at any of the abundant single white or Asian men?

I guess she had her heart set on a Billy Dee Williams type, but at least in one episode she seemed outright desperate to get any man that breathed. Yet she still only threw herself at African American men.

Because she was black

So was Helen Willis... So you can't say it was just because she was black that the writers/casting dirs had her only going for/involved with African American men-- in Hawaii, a place where the overwhelming majority of single men are Asians or whites. But, I will give credit to your point in that in contrast with Florence, Helen came from a privileged background. So it was a class issue too for Florence. Helen would have had more in common with rich white men because her own father was a rich businessman. I guess Florence would have felt in that time period more comfortable with a lot of black men as far as their social backgrounds and experiences.

Even so, there were in the 80s a lot of white men who would have found Florence in particular attractive.

Louise, however, was too much of a big mammy type to interest men, black or white or brown. Am I wrong on this last point?

NO WAY! Did you even watch those episodes?? Florence was a funny and integral part of the storyline.

She met and was going to marry that Hawaiin surfer dude and she was an important part of the storyline.

Florence should've been included for sure and they did the right thing!
