I agree that the last season will likely be out by the end of the year. What has ruined the DVD's issued so far is the cuts and edits in the episodes. In the 4th season set, one episode has 3 minutes hacked from it, others have been cut also but to a lesser extent. These DVD's are basically worthless, but if you want the show bad enough there's no choice but to accept them for what they are. Despite many incomplete episodes, these must still be selling pretty well because they've been issuing the seasons at a quick rate.

Is there any official reason why we are seeing edited episodes on the DVDs?

I believe it has to do with the music in the episodes. If there is a song in an episode and CBS doesn't own the rights to the song, rather than pay for the rights they just cut the song out from the DVD. I think the background music in some scenes was changed also. I think the whole thing is a joke, but it is what it is and I guess we just have to accept it.

I was wondering if the edits on this DVD is something the production company thinks it can get away with since it was a show that aired on TV at a time when no one had VCR's. So I take it you watched GP when it was on CBS in the 60's and I'm amazed you can tell what was cut out after so many years went by without you seeing it uncut. Unless you saw the show UNCUT in syndication in your local area. So just wondering when did you actually see the full length eps of GP?

The length of the episodes on the DVD is all you need to see that some episodes are cut. Uncut episodes of Gomer Pyle are in the 25:30 range. Some episodes on the DVD's are less than 24 minutes and there is one episode on the 4th season set that is less than 23 minutes.

But what I'm saying is how can you know for sure if you never seen a CBS version of that ep? Now if the length of the ep was 20 min then we can kind of say it was cut but at 23 and 24 min it' really hard to say

Believe me, there are cuts in some of the episodes. Granted, they probably cut as little as necessary but they are still cuts just the same. And on the DVD cases, CBS prints their famous disclaimer: "Some episodes may be edited from their original network versions".

Oh ok, well that explains. I wanted to sample the show but the store in my neigborhood that carries GP prices them at $40. That's too high for a blind buy

That would make a great christmas present, wouldn't it? That episode you mentioned is one of favorites too.

If there's a Walmart in your area, you may find them cheaper there. They had them for under $30 at our local one.

Then you'd have to get a used copy most likely. I bought used copies of Good Times, The Lucy Show, The Beverly Hillbillies and Starsky & Hutch at a place called Hastings in our town and they all played just fine, and they were all under $16 except for Starsky & Hutch which was a little higher. Maybe you can run up on some good deals in your area.

Default Season 4 does have cut scenes

He's right season 4 does have cut scenes such as the episode when Gomer dreams a dream 3 times and it comes true.
Sgt.Carter is dreaming he is getting married and as he walks down the aisle
he sees Gomer everywhere as an usher, the Piano player,The preacher,
And as he looks up to his right he is supossed to see Gomer Singing a song
but that shot is cut out!

Also when he sings in another episode and walks off stage and falls asleep Carter wakes him up but when he goes back out to sing another song they cut that out to.

I just picked up Season Three at Meijer for $19.95. I think they are closing out some of their tv dvd's though as they had the last three season of The Andy Griffith Show and the last three seasons of Three's Company for the same price here in Louisville, KY. Good deals if you don't already own them.

Back to the thread though, I am anxious for Season Five as it has some really great episodes including the final one which is a bit sad in it's own way.
