Sophie Altman, creator of the long-running quiz show "It's Academic" passed away May 24. She was 95.
"it's Academic" debuted in 1961 on WRC-TV in Washington, DC and is still on the air with the same host, Mac McGarry. Other cities over the years that have aired their own versions are Baltimore, Cleveland, Chicago and New York. I remember the New York version from the mid 60s and early 70s that aired on WNBC-TV on Saturdays and was hosted by Art James. I also remember watching a late 60s episode where then Jeopardy host Art Fleming subbed for James. Anyone remember this show? Feel free to post. |

Sounds like something that has run here in Indianapolis for years. Here it's called the Brain Game, and it pits local high school teams of 4 or 5, answering academic questions on many subjects. It was hosted by the long-time WTHR weatherman Bob Gregory, until he retired, and was replacd by the new longtime weatherman, Chris Wright.

I have an episode of the NEW YORK version with Art James, and one
DC episode as well. Both are nice quality. I recall watching the show in my youth. It used to air on Saturday afternoons/early evening. |
