Default Question about Thorny

Did HE have a job?

It seems he has as much free time as Ozzie does

"Hey Harriet, Can Ozzie come out and play? "

A good question, but you know, I don't think he did.

Ozzie purposely didn't have a job. They felt that this way anyone could ID with him.

Well for the sake of the story, I felt Ozzie did work, even if his work life was never shown.

Actually what I should have said is that Ozzie's profession was never revealed on the show, so that anyone could ID with him better. But yes, I had the impression he did some kind of work too. Interestingly, the boys' jobs are clearly revealed - law clerks/lawyers in the Law Office of Kelley & Dobson (think I got the name right). Clearly this was the influence of 'ol Oz, who in real life was just a heartbeat away from being a real lawyer. He had been going to law school but then the band & bandleading took off.

This kind of career shift has happened to other celebrities too. For example, Johnny Mathis was on his way to becoming a professional athlete, had to make a career choice, as both were PANNING OUT, and opting for singing. The rest is history.

I know in the movie "Here Come The Nelsons", Ozzie was an advertising executive. So for the sake of the series, I felt he was still in that job, although the series was clearly intended to show simply the domestic side of Ozzie and Harriet. I'm glad in a way that we never saw Oz at the office.

I'm mixed on that. I think they could have come up with some hilarious scenes. Can you imagine Oz at the mimeograph machine with gags like all the paper flying out of it all over the place, getting mimeo ink all over his hands, the mathematically challenged guy from The Pancake Mix coming to work at the office, and .....gasp!....try to figure out how to use an adding machine?

But as we saw none of this was needed - but would have been a fertile source for laughs.

Well, the series kinda made up for it by showing Dave and Rick's work life. Man, that Connie Parker.....mmmmmmmm hmmmmmm

Yeah Miss Edwards rocks. Always so super competant. Do you have "Losing Miss Edwards?" - its a fun ep. Also she's great in Wally's Traffic Ticket.

Not sure if I do-since the only other compilation I have is a 4 episode cheapy with I think Christmas episodes and such. We know it's not on Mill Creek or the Platinum sets.

When exactly did Don Defore leave the series? Watching these shows, it seems he left sometime before he started "Hazel", correct? Did he and Ozzie have conflicts?

Apparently, DeFore went directly to Ozzie and asked for more money and more publicity. Ozzie, a stickler for routine, wanted any request from DeFore to come from his agent. He considered this unprofessional and fired DeFore.

wow!! Maybe this was shown in the biographical TV movie on ABC, but I don't recall it. I do know that Ozzie kept a tight reign over every aspect of the series.

Man, I would really love to read one of those. The Nelsons were just fascinating on and off-screen.
