Ever notice how much were NOT shown the girls ever serving meals? I think maybe "New Girl Part 2" and one other episode were the only times. We never really saw the other students eating that much either.
Also how did the girls manage to help Mrs G prep meals and yet still find the time to attend class? Did the cafeteria serve three meals a day (since this was a boarding school)? We saw Howard in the second season--but how unrealistic was it for Mrs G not to have a staff helping her? We can assume Eastland was not some small country operation--if it had dorms, etc--the school must have had a sizable population. |

Also, the size of the dining area was small. Yes, it is a studio set and only so much can be shown, but still, I got the feeling the school was a prestigious school with at least 300 students.

As far as the size of the cafeteria, it would have been much bigger (a la the reunion)...That's a trick I've seen used a lot on shows...you're regularly shown what seems to be a fairly small room, and then one day they turn the camera around (or there's a reunion) and BOOM, turns out there's a huge other side of the place...
And with the girls having time to help with stuff...I know that when I worked in the cafeteria at my (regular public) high school, kids who helped at breakfast had to be there pretty early, and we got to leave classes a bit early before lunch. I'm guessing Eastland was a three-meal-a-day school, and so dinner wouldn't be as much of a problem, since regular classes probably finished up around 3 or 4 in the afternoon and then dinner would have been at 5 or 6... |

Yep the reunion set was probably a more realistic version of what the Eastland cafeteria was actually like.
Still I don't know how Mrs. G did it all....that was a huge undertaking everyday. |

It is possible that there may have been other girls working in the cafeteria on a volunteer basis.
In 'The Four Musketeers,' Mrs. Garrett mentions that new girls will be moving into the room over the cafeteria since Jo, Blair, Natalie, and Tootie have paid off the debt on the van...that could mean that there were already other girls doing some of the work... Among my friends who went to private schools, apparently helping out with that sort of stuff was a fairly regular thing that a lot of them did at some point... |

When I went to private school (as well as my girls) the staff consisted of parents (mostly mothers) who volunteered their time.
