I was reading the Monkee bible (the day by day book by Andrew Sandoval) and came across something that raised a question to me.
The story has been told for years how the Monkees never knew they had a second album coming out and how they had to buy it to hear it, having never heard it before. Peter Tork has a quote attributed to him to this effect on page 80 of the book which is the entry for January 1967 when MOTM was officially released. HOWEVER...on page 77 for the December 31st 1966 entry, it notes how the group are at WSAI radio in conjuction with their concert appearance in Cincinnati OH and I quote 'entertain winners of radio station WSAI's 'Meet the Monkees' contest with an early copy of their yet-to-be-released album, More Of The Monkees, playing the record in their hotel room." Now, if the second story is true (and for some reason I'm more apt to believe that because there is probably more documentation on that than just one persons memory)...how could the first one be as well?? The group obviously would've known about the album if Colgems gave them an advance copy to play on this station. They wouldn't have been able to buy a copy of an album that hadn't been released yet and probably wouldn't have been able to play any tracks ahead of it's release without proper clearance from Colgems. They obviously would've had it and heard it before they had to 'purchase' their own copy if one is to believe Peter's story. I'm not calling anyone a liar, this just seems strange and a little contradictory and thought it would be a fun discussion point. Any thoughts?? |

It's interesting that two different things could be said in the same book but definitely the second statement is the accurate one.

That Monkees book is now out-of-print. I wish I'd bought a copy. I don't know if there'll be another edition. If you've got one, hold onto it.

Is it really out of print??....hang on (checking Amazon)...you are correct!!!
That is strange and too bad really...it is one of the best books on the group. That being said, if you are interested, they have them used for $6.95. I don't fault the author (not saying you were indicating that you or I was to begin with) for having both stories in the book (and so close together) as he is documenting (and doing so very well) what he's been told and researched but it just struck me as odd. I know they (mainly Peter and Mike) had an axe to grind with Kirshner so maybe it is just one of those stories of urban legend that has been passed down now and accepted as fact. The book sure does give strong dispute to it though. I wasn't there and I don't know any of these people personally but I always thought that Kirshner came across as very arrogant about the whole thing in any interview I've seen him give on the subject. It seems a shame because I think if he could've put the ego aside for a bit and offered his experience to the group while letting them play, they could've made some great records together. Then again, we never would've seen something like Headquarters. Then again, he may have saved us from the fate of what was The Birds, the Bees, and the Monkees. However, I digress. ![]() Interestingly, it also suggests on page 86 that the song presented to the Monkees on the day Mike put his fist through the wall was a composition called 'Sugar Man' not 'Sugar Sugar' as history has often cited. |

The author, Andrew Sandoval, posts (or used to post) on a music forum I'm a member of. He would chime in frequently with updates about the book and the deluxe edition CDs from Rhino Records, which he was also involved with.
I recommend any and all of the Deluxe Edition Monkees CDs, BTW. You get the stereo and mono versions of the albums, plus plenty of rare b-sides and rarities! They're still in print, but don't wait until the CD is extinct to get 'em! |

Too funny Dr. T.
There isn't much activity on this board so I thought I'd post the same note on there (I haven't posted much over there) and it had some really good feedback there too.

Yes.....a buddy of mine pointed me to that board and that was the reason for my purchasing the new CDs. Nice pic on your profile. I have that TV Guide here in my office.
