Default We all should know this was the reason the show fell to #84 after season 6

Once Viewers saw that Keith who was about to go to the NFL had to live with the Evans after injuring his leg after the wedding. I know whoever was still watching at this point just said-"THE HELL WITH THIS SHOW AND IT"S LACK OF IMPROVEMENT FOR THE EVANS FAMILY"

I think the viewers already knew the Evans living in the projects was not going to change with the addition of Keith. There had to be some news either in TVGuide or some other publication talking abt the new season. I wasn't shocked when they remained in the projects.

But they started off that season in a worst situation than season 5 since it was 5 people in the house with only 1 Working. Unlike season 5 where it was 3 people in the household and 2 working

Believe me, the amount of people working had nothing to do with the ratings and how people reacted to the show. Remember, the family did financially better AFTER James died, but the ratings started to plummet and the ratings went down further when Esther Rolle left. Even with her return, the show was no longer a strong show. Who knows what other reasons the ratings went down. It could be a change in schedule, it could be other hit shows airing at the same time, etc. I do know the amount of people NOT working in the Evans house had absolutely nothing to do with ratings.

I'm sure it had a lot to do wih viewers tired of seeing a struggling black family that looked as if it was never going to change so that's when people probably bailed

But that is the point, they knew that before the new season started. I am sure TVGuide or some other publication told the viewers this information BEFOREHAND. I recall reading TVGuide and getting some information abt the new season and what would happen on the shows I liked. I am not saying they went into detail abt Keith's injury, but they would mention something. The last season was already bad and people got tired of not having Esther Rolle and the lame stories. By this point, nothing would save the show.

I'm trying to imagine myself getting ready to watch Good Times in the fall of 78 after reading all summer about the return of esther rolle and to see after a beautiful wedding how things got bad for the evans again I would have just watched Rhoda at 8pm on Saturday Nights instead-lol

Who would break their leg like that anyway? If Keith had tripped over JJ and fallen down a flight of stairs, I would've bought the fact that he broke his leg. What a stupid plot device.

I know.

The viewers did not expect to see the Evans move on ahead financially. They thought a new character might help the show, but they knew this wasn't the case with Penny and it sure as heck would not help with Keith. They wanted Esther and John together.

Besides, what other shows aired at the same time as GT in season 6? That had to play a major part as well in the ratings being low.

Not true, black viewers wanted to see the family improve in all areas and that was always a problem that it never happend. That's the main issue black leaders had with the show

Chips aired at the same time as Good Times

No, what I meant was before the new season started, the viewers had a heads up abt the whole season of GT. They knew the family was still going to be seen in the ghetto and having tough times but this time around, they would have another character, Keith. That is what I meant abt the viewers not expecting the family to succeed. They knew it was another season in the ghetto.

CHiPs. That explains it right there. That was a hot show and people were tuning into that show.

Things went downhill after season five and I think that things continued to spiral from there.

Things were no longer the same. People missed the original GT and other hit shows on other networks were taking the viewers away.

My mom actually stopped watching after James died so when she sees Keith and Penny she knows she had stopperd watching it. She only watched the show when it was on Tuesday nights(1974-75)

Times had changed, for sure. I actually like both the James and post-James eras, but things were getting stale by the end.
