Default 5 Reasons For Renewal And 5 Reasons For Cancellation

Well, we are exactly two weeks away from the moment of truth. No, I am not referring to that dull Fox game show, I am talking about annual upfronts for the FOX network.

As it stands right now, 'Back to You' is what is being referred to as "On the bubble," meaning, it can either be renewed (Yay) or cancelled. (Boo) I have pain stakingly reviewed the facts and have garnered 5 reasons for both a renewal or dare I say a cancellation of this sitcom.

Lets start...

5 Reasons For Renewal

1. Patricia and Kelsey - There should be enough star power here, that the suits at FOX give them a second shot.

2. The Writers Strike - Even the dimmest bulbs who criticize the ratings know that the show's on again off again schedule didn't help the show whatsoever.

3. Steve Levitan, Christopher Lloyd and James Burrows - Cheers, Frasier, Just Shoot Me...C'mon, that is enough pedigree to show this sitcom some confidence.

4. Improvements - The sitcom has steadily shown great strides in improvements in writing and storylines.

5. Improves greatly over the 'Til Death lead in - Meaning simply, if Til Death could be renewed for a second season, so should BTY.

5 Reasons For Cancellation

1. Lackluster Ratings - While the ratings aren't bad, they certainly aren't what FOX expected.

2. Expensive - Let's face it, Patty, Kelsey and Fred Willard don't exactly come cheap. Is the money worth the ratings they are getting?

3. Traditional sitcoms are a dying breed - We certainly heard a lot about this in recent years. Perhaps FOX feels the same way.

4. American Idol Bump - It seems the AI bump hasn't really worked to everyone's expectations. Don't get me wrong, it has helped...but enough?

5. FOX - If this sitcom was on a bigger network like say CBS, this sitcom would be a better fit. FOX seems to have more of a comfort zone in cartoons and reality shows.

FOX has never had any patience with their live action comedies. If it's not an instant ratings hit, it's gone.

That's a fair and balanced appraisal of the situation. Who wrote that Brian? I never thought about the financial aspect of it, with the big salaries, and it makes sense that it will be a factor regarding the show's renewal or not. So, Fox has given a definite date for the big announcement?

Brian you're killing me ..lol..

Put the blame on FOX ...Brian...put the blame on FOX

The show was not given a fair chance at all, from the start last fall.

Yes, it had the star power but everyone from the beginning had doubts audiences would have trouble finding it on FOX. And what does FOX do, puts it to anchor the whole night pairing it with a "ratings power" 'Til Death going neck and neck against the most buzzed about new show of the Fall - Pushing Daises. Yet, right when the show was starting to build momentum the damn strike happened - what does FOX do- pulls it off the schedule completely with the initial idea to pair it with AI. But did they actually do it, of course not...two episodes were not enough. One example, House was struggling it's first year then they scheduled it after AI for what two seasons straight? That's what I call giving it a real chance. Not toy with it, one night here, two months off, one night there...one night everywhere..lol..

Am I making any sense here...lol...

Are Kelsey and Patricia are getting the same $$$ they were getting from Frasier and ELR, repsectively?

Kelsey was making 1.6 million an episode during Frasier's heyday, is he getting the same from FOX now?

I am not 100% what they are making. I doubt they are getting what they made from Frasier and ELR, but I am positive it is a lot more than the average sitcom salary.

I like this thread. I think FOX needs to really be patient with this show, like it's been mentioned before. The show has had a realy bumpy ride this season, and even if they renew it out of pity, it deserves the renewal. The show has been steady in the ratings since it returned from the strike. It didn't exactly get the "Idol bump" we were hoping for, but look at Til Death right now. It was on after Idol for awhile last season, and now it's doing even worse.

Is there any chance at all we might get the word on renewal before May 15th??

From what I read on the EW months ago they still comand 6 figure salaries somewhere between 175.000 to 270.000 per episode with Grammer fairing slightly higher as he is an exec. producer on the show as well.
