Default Cautionary tales of UM

Here's a question.

How has UM affected your life (a part from getting a good night's sleep)? Have you ever changed your behavior and/or habits following a case profiled on UM? Like:

Don't go the ATM at night (Matthew Chase and Gretchen Burford)
Make sure all windows and doors are locked before going to bed. (Stanley Gryziwek).
Keep away from big vans that don't have windows (Tara Calico)

Anyone else?

Don't go to an ATM at night. Don't pull over during a road rage incident. Watch out for graveyard shifts.

Never go to a car wash at night.

Never walk to the store late at night.

Always call the police if you hear someone being tortured next door.

Never get into a vehicle with anyone who tries to force you (if you can help it).

Never drink milkshakes or anything else that tastes funny or burns.

I work third shift. It has its drawbacks, but somebody has to work them. Additionally, robberies and such can happen at anytime, anywhere, as proven by assorted cases on UM. Even in broad daylight, or in rural towns where nothing ever seems to happen.

Do not get on the bad side of any police department.

Don't sleep in a motorhome at a rest stop.

Also, if i were a criminal, not to set my family's house on fire and act like I didn't, not to kill and bury my wife in a supposed compost area in the back yard, not to drop all the money i've robbed from the bank or leave lollipops in my abandoned cars.

Never spend the night at a rest stop.

Never get in a car with someone who doesn't like you (Wendy Camp) because if you do you're really at their mercy.

As far as watching UM in general affecting my life I also find myself being more hesitant when walking alone in the more isolated blocks of my town. I keep hearing Robert Stack's voice saying "she left for a walk and was never seen again.....".

It would be inadvisable to travel on a lonely stretch of road alone. I fear that scenario because you could go for miles without seeing another person, and if you found yourself in serious trouble, your cries for help would go unheard!

That scenario was mentioned by Robert Stack in the segment about the murder of Dexter Stefonek, who was murdered in Montana during a car trip home to Wisconsin after staying with his son in Oregon.

+1 for the road rage

It's so easy to get mad at someone who is an idiot in traffic, but after watching UM... yikes. How many times did truly innocent people get maimed or killed by road rage on UM?

Makes you think twice.

That also goes for sleeping or even stopping at a rest stop at night or in an isolated area. Too many of those cases as well.

Here's a little twist on this thread, for comic relief. Let's call it "Other Life Lessons from UM"

- Don't cancel your mom's credit card on Friday when her dead body won't be discovered until the following Monday

- Never hire a woman who says, "It's a new store -- we can build it together."

- If Jule Caylor offers you a ride to the BART station, just say NO.

- Never take coupons from a guy promoting "Somebody's Pizza"

- Never believe anything you hear on a morning show bit called "Confess Your Crime"

- If you start a UFO hoax, for the love of God make sure you take all the models out of your house before you move.

I gotta say, watching UM has convinced me to never pick up a hitchhiker.

And I'd still sleep at a rest stop, but if somebody knocks on my door claiming to be the police, rest assured I'm not opening the door.

I'll go you one better, wiseguy...

- If said 3-wheeled car turns out to be a sham and the 'inventor' is arrested for fraud, don't say, "There is a group of us who still believe in The Dale and want to continue making the car."

Now THAT is rich. . .
