Default Cheers Season Nine--- Complaint Thread

I'm sure most of us here are very pleased to FINALLY see the ninth season of CHEERS come to DVD after two long years of waiting. However there are some minor edits, so if anyone has any more complaints about this (or other aspects of the set), please direct them to this thread. All viewpoints are valid. Please don't bring anymore negativity to the regular season nine on DVD thread.

In the episode "Grease", we don't hear "I Fought The Law" but some other song I don't even recognize. That stinks!

And I know the 200th episode special was edited, but does anyone know if other cast members even spoke on the original (Roger Rees, Bebe Neuwirth)? We didn't hear a peep out of them on this.

No, just the 200th special, if you want to call it an extra.

From watching the original broadcast, which I stilll have on VHS 17+ years later, I can tell you that neither Roger Rees nor Bebe Neuwirth say anything.

The only things that were cut from the 200th episode special were music-related clips that, fortunately, appear intact on their corresponding episodes in previous seasons.

Also, regarding Bobby Fuller's "I Fought The Law" being cut from the "Grease" episode, I'm willing to bet CBS tried hard to get it (might have been one of the things holding the set up for two years). The publisher and/or record label probably wanted a ridiculous amount of money for it.

What we have on the DVD is a sound-alike, probably commissioned by the studio, that, if you listen closely, mentions sitting in a jail or prison cell. While I'd rather have had "I Fought The Law," I think the substitute is satisfactory and doesn't hinder my enjoyment of the episode.

Other things cut from episodes included Carla singing the theme to Winnie The Pooh (in the episode in which Norm gets stuck in the window), as well as "Mr. Tambourine Man" playing on the jukebox in an episode.

These are all music-related cuts, and again, I suspect these portions of the episodes were what held the set up for so long.

See, now this is what I can't understand. If anything, a song as old as that being on a show as popular as "Cheers" is, to me, free publicity. How much interest did "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers gain as a result of the movie "Ghost"? A whole new generation of listeners went out and bought that song after seeing the movie. So I would think the opposite; that musicians should pay the show to use their song because it's getting publicity, just as I'm sure Pepsi or Coke would have to pay to have their product in plain view on the set. Makes no sense to me.

And actually, it has interfered with my ability to enjoy at least that part of the episode. The song was absolutely perfect for that situation.

I rented season 9 of Cheers. I'm on disc 3 and have made a few observations. On "Veggie Boyd", the theme song is cut. Originally, it was played out on nbc, making it around 22:40 originally. Its hard to tell the reasoning behind it. But its better than the story line missing. On the 200th, it seems very abrupt with the music segments. After Woody sings the Kelly song, it goes to the songs. But a lot of the songs are probably edited. Also, the original Paramount sign at the end of the shows is replaced with the CBS logo. Finally, the case could've been a lot better for a collectors series. I think the cheap plastic will do for a 2 hour movie. But I guess we're lucky to have a dvd release of season 9 at all. If I discover anything else, I'll let you know.
As some have said, its better to have a release than none at all. I'm still glad that season 10 is coming in September. But I do notice it is listed as "Cheers the 10th season" I guess we better get used to the edits on 10 and 11 also. Just hope for the best.
