Hi. I am not sure this belongs here. But I am going to post it anyways.
September 12, 2001

It hasn’t even been 24 hours after the shock that hit the United States and every one is feeling the effects that the attack on the United States has caused. All the ramifications are horrendous. As I drove my oldest daughter to school this morning there were more police officers out patrolling than normal. They had officers out checking out all the complaints of any suspicious activities going on in the capital of Nebraska today. I proceeded to drive my oldest to school and myself to work. I arrived at work like any other day except this day when I got to work and as I was going about my daily activities I got an outside call. I went to answer the call and there was my youngest on the phone calling. What she asked me I will never forget as long as I live. Her words cut through me like a knife going thru butter. She asked Are we going to die Mommy? How do you answer that question. It took me back and all I could say is I don’t know baby. I said we are safe for now. She said but we could. I said I haven’t the foggiest idea what is going to happen. I told her to put her faith in God. I didn’t know what else to tell her. I mean the world as we knew it was gone forever. The trust we all once had disappeared yesterday when those hijacked planes flew into their final destinations. Never more will we be able to have the carefree trust we once had. Then my daughter asked who was doing this to us? I said again I don’t know honey. When you become a parent your job is to protect your child until they are out on their own. How may I ask can I do that when there are terrorists out there not giving a damn who or what they hurt, or how many innocent lives they take out to prove what point? This is what I am not sure of. What point are they trying to prove? I guess I just don’t get it. I was raised to believe in people. But that is so hard to do when people can fly a aircraft full of people into the side of a building full of people who got up yesterday to go thru their normal day, not knowing that this could possibly be the last day of their lives. How many children are parentless this morning in the aftermath of what happened. I feel for those innocent children who don’t understand any of this and can’t comprehend why they can’t see their mom or dad again. The people that did this can’t even understand the ramifications that these children will live with the rest of their lives. How can someone be so cruel. I guess it really hit me when I had to answer the question Are we going to die Mommy? How do you answer a question like that? I haven’t a clue. You should never have to answer that question from a 12 year old. That is just wrong.

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I hope writing them out and sharing them helped you in talking to your daughter.

Lisa Whelchel's 9-year-old also wrote out her thoughts last night, and Lisa took a break from her usual FOL diary & photos journal today to post her daughter's letter to President Bush.

Perhaps this little kid's words can help other little kids make sense of these events, and help parents see the events from a kid's perspective.

I feel so bad. So many innocent peoples lifes were lost..Read my sig. and find out more of what I think about yesterday 9/11/01, (strange date? 911 as in call the police!)...

Why is there such HATRED in the world? On September 11th 2001 some people purposly crashed into the Twin Towers and destroyed them.They ruined our skyline!!!!

Everyone was rushed out of school, including me.Everyone was like, whats going on? Nobody would tell us..But soon enough, I found out. Why would people do such a thing? Please, let there be no hatred in the world. Why can't we all get along :*(
