The millions of viewers who watched Bob Barker on "The Price is Right" for more than three decades may miss him, but Bob doesn't have any regrets about walking away from one of the most successful hosting gigs in television history. "I think I quit at just the right time," Bob told me recently. "I loved the show; I enjoyed the show right up to the last minute of the last show. But, I don't miss it so much that I want to go back and do it again. I think I'm going to be very happy in retirement." But what about all the overly enthusiastic contestants who wore wacky clothes, jumped around on stage, chased the host and tried to hug him, or even passed out cold on camera? So, does he miss them? "I expected to miss them and I do," he said, laughing. Then he joked: "The thing that I miss most is the money." Bob, the winner of 19 Emmy Awards, was succeeded as host of "Price" by Drew Carey. I had to know whether he was now a loyal viewer of the show he hosted from 1972 to 2007. "I turn it on occasionally for just a couple of games and I think that he's doing a good job," Bob said of Drew. "I really do." If Bob doesn't have much time to watch game shows, it's no surprise really. Even at the age of 84, he's not exactly retired. "I've always been busy working for animals but now I'm even more busy and enjoying every moment of it," said the famous animal-rights activist. (Bob began ending each -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- episode of "The Price Is Right" with the phrase: "Help control the pet population; have your pet spayed or neutered," in 1985). He's also busy writing his autobiography, reflecting on his 50 years on television - which, in addition to 35 years on "Price," included 19 years as host of the wacky quiz show "Truth or Consequences" and host of the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants for 20 years. "It's going along very well and we're hoping to finish it by June 1 and they'd like to get it published in late 2008," he said of the book, which does not yet have a title. But the most suggested title, Bob said, has been: "For the Whole Story ... Come on Down!" I wondered what it's like to be Bob Barker and to enjoy so much good will among a public that felt like they knew him personally because he was such a fixture in their television viewing lives. "It has been a wonderful experience," he said. "I never played a cowboy or a doctor or a detective. I was myself on every show I did and people feel as if I was a next-door neighbor, and I like that. "It's a wonderful feeling." |

Nice article. I'm glad Bob's enjoying his retirement. He has a lot of energy, and God bless him for his activism with animal rights. I've always admired him for that. I hope he has good health and celebrates many more birthdays.

I'm glad to hear that Bob is happy and healthy and enjoying his retirement. He brought a great deal of joy to people during his long, celebrated tenure on The Price Is Right, so he deserves to sit back and enjoy his retirement!
