Default Patty's TV parents

I know this was Patty's show and she was the star, but I've always found the interaction between her TV parents (Jean Byron, William Schallert) as being rather strange. Neither one has much of a personality, and they usually address each other by their first names. Not often do you hear one call the other a pet name like honey, dear, or sweetie. They don't really show any love towards each other like a married couple should do. Martin treats wife Natalie almost like a live in housekeeper, similar to the way Mr. B. is towards Hazel. It makes you wonder how they were able to have two kids!

This is one of my favorite old shows, the episodes are great but the way the parents act towards one another is odd and unusual, unlike anything else you'll see in your typical family sitcom. When Mr. Lane comes home from work, one would expect to see Mrs. Lane greet him with a kiss but to be honest I don't recall ever seeing that happen!

hmmmmmmm, been quite awhile since I've seen an episode. If this ever comes out on DVD or some channel actually picks up the reruns--I'll be on the lookout to see if what you say is true

There are times when they show affection towards each other, but it's not seen very often. She seems more affectionate towards him than he is towards her. Overall, their relationship plays out more like a close friendship as opposed to that of a married couple.

Really? I need to go back and check. Their characters were a bit funnier in the reunion movie. It seemed as though Natalie (Patty's mom) was more of a comic relief playing the forgetful and slightly ditzy mother. I loved Jean Byron in the role.

I love Patty Duke, and it really needs to be on DVD!

Occasionally you will see Martin call Natalie honey or sweetie, but usually he just calls her Natalie like she is a servant or just another person living in the house. Overall, she seems more affectionate towards him than he is towards her. I don't recall seeing them kiss very often in the show either. Out of all the episodes, I recall only two scenes from the parents bedroom, one is in the episode Are Mothers People and the other is in the episode Do You Trust Your Daughter. I believe the bedroom shows Martin and Natalie having seperate beds. This was Patty's show and she was the focal point, so I imagine the producers chose to be discreet regarding Mr. & Mrs. Lane and their intimate lives.

It seems that Patty was closer to Papo, than Mamo. Maybe it was because she could wrap him around her finger.

Did the parents ever touch each other? I think Martin called Natalie "Nat" on occasion, but I think Natalie always said "Martin."

I am anxious for this show to come out on DVD. I have so many good memories about Patty, Cathy, Ross and Richard.

When we were kids it was cool to copy Ross and say "F.G.I." to someone. It meant "for-get it."

I have The Patty Duke Show complete series, superb quality and uncut episodes on 26 DVD's. I'm currently working on upgrading a couple episodes and I should also be getting the reunion movie Still Rockin In Brooklyn Heights. I plan on making this available around mid-December or so, in the meantime anyone who's interested in obtaining a set please contact me via PM.

I often wondered if William Schallert might be gay? It doesn't matter a hoot to me as I like his acting just as I liked Raymond Burr and Dick Sargent. What they do in their personal life matters not to me. His IMDB info states he has been married since 1949 but lists no children. For an actor who has done as many tv shows as he has (albeit usually in supporting roles) there is not much information about him out there. Now that PD is back on This TV I have been dvr-ing it and then transferring to dvd daily.
