While all Office fans were thrilled that the show was finally back last night - and it did well in the ratings with 10.9 million viewers - the episode was edgy and a lot of TV bloggers are mixed in their recaps and reviews of it today. In the episode, Michael and Jan threw a dinner party and then bickered throughout the whole thing, making Jim, Pam, Angela, Andy - and the viewers - very uncomfortable. Here's a roundup of what people are saying:
Daemon's TV: "Unfortunately, even though there were some funny moments, this episode was not the return I was expecting. It wasn’t the kind of funny I have come to expect from The Office. ... Bring back old Jan!" TV Squad: It was a "Barry Bond's-style chemically enhanced mega-home-run." BuzzSugar: "I spent more time cringing than laughing in this episode. That's not necessarily a bad thing, as The Office does squirmy humor better than anyone else on television. I think for a first night back, I would have preferred something awkward but laugh-out-loud funny, and maybe something also set in the office so we could have reconnected with more characters." Remote Access: "This episode was on the dark side, and many of the laughs were of the uncomfortable variety. That’s just how I like it." And in an interview at Buddy TV, Melora Hardin, who plays Jan, explains her character: "Sometimes she is small and sometimes she is big. It's part of her rainbow of colors and wonderfully juicy flaws." Note: Did you know you can buy Serenity by Jan candles? |

I loved the episode. It was very different but in a good way. It was dark, crazy, and hilarious. A great way to come back in my opinion. The only thing bad about it was that half the cast wasn't featured because only 1 minute of the episode actually took place in the office. I don't think that we'll have episodes like this for the rest of the season.

I thought it was a great episode. Yeah, it was a bit uncomfortable at times, but it does work well.
The British version had lots more scenes that were uncomfortable. For the most part, the American version keeps it light. |
