Fun fact: “Back to You” executive producer Christopher Lloyd was also the executive producer of “Out of Practice.” “When I saw Chris was attached to ‘Back to You,’ I just sat by the phone with my fingers crossed,” Burrell said.

On the local news: “My character is like the guy with a dream deferred. I basically am trying to look at local news from the character’s perspective as the guy who wants more. I’m looking at local news totally differently now. I come from a pretty small town in Oregon, and watching the news there, there is nobody there who looks like they want to stay there.”

On four-camera comedies: “I feel like the audience feels maybe the same thing that we do, which is a kind of warmth. There’s a warmth with the multi-camera show, because we are literally putting on a show every week, and there’s an earnestness to that. . . . There is something incredible about how close you get as a cast.”

On co-stars Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton: “They’re carrying the plot line. What I’m really learning a lot about is how to hoist the story on your back and carry the story and still be light. They both just handle it with such grace and they’ve done it for so long.”
