Default Did Walter Die?

Just curious, I haven't seen this show in years and was wondering if Walter was killed off so Maude could go to Washington?

No, Walter followed his wife to Washington. (and the irony being Bill Macy ended up starring in "Hanging In", the short lived sitcom that evolved from "Maude"'s terminated format change, when Bea decided she had enough.)

Thank you Aaron for the info, I didn't realize he was 86 years old. I did know that he was alive though, because he starred in a recent episode of Back To You.

I saw him on Back to You! I was really happy to see that he's doing well. According to IMDB, it appears that he's done quite a lot of guest appearances on more current shows.

Walter... well, the question's been answered, but that would have been a very depressing turn of events, had they killed Walter off. He did have a heart attack, and later he did spend time in a mental hospital for an attempted--or was it just threatened--suicide.

I've read about Hanging In, and I know I'd have hated it, because I'm so accustomed to seeing Walter and Maude together. However, he's a different character altogether in that show, so I suppose it wouldn't have mattered so much. I just wouldn't have liked seeing Walter without Maude. (The "Maude" episodes "The Split" etc. depress me.)

I didn't care for the final three eps of Maude, either. I prefer to believe it was all someone's strange dream. Maude is too volatile a personality to hold that job. And changing the setting and circumstances of the show just seems an absurd idea. I'd watch Bea in almost anything, I think, but I wouldn't be as riveted if I had to watch Maude in the new role she took up at the end.

Walter WAS dead on the inside though; that is what happens with such a strong woman.

Dead on the inside? Not at all! He is perfectly able to stand up for himself, which he does, time and again.

What makes you think so? Please elaborate. I just don't interpret him that way. Maude is strong-willed, but she has an equally soft side, as well. She isn't always insensitive to Walter's feelings.

maybe its just my opinion, but I don't think he stood up to Maude as much as he should have, and really she shouldn't have put him in that position as much as she did in the first place.
