Making Youtube clips - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

So I've got days to kill, downloaded a few dozen TV clips off You Tube and want to put about 3 seconds of each of them in a clip montage bemoaning the lack of quality these days with a tear-inducing track in the background.

Is there adequate free software out there that would do it, like Audacity is for audio. If so which is the best?

I just use Windows Movie Maker, but I'm cheap and lazy.
