If memory serves me right I remember hearing that Rick Schroder's mother wanted him out because she thought he was starting to upstage him. Think the same happaned with Corky Pigeon (Freddy)

He was Ricky's other friend and stayed until season 3 having first appeared in season 1.

I always wondered if that was the case, because Derek was becoming the supporting character that was getting the attention. Funny the producers just didn't spin him off. Was it the next season that Jason got "It's Your Move"?

He was the funniest one on there. I also liked the J.T. and the guy who played Freddy, I haven't seen this show in so long, maybe I will buy the DVD.

Jason Bateman was so adorable and funny as Derek.
One of my favorite characters alongside Rick.
Every scene he's in still cracks me up because of Jason's great timing for comedy.
