Default Madonna: 'New York has lost its buzz'

By WENN world entertainment news - 2 hours 44 minutes ago

Madonna swapped New York for London, because the Big Apple has lost its status as the world's cultural capital.

The Michigan native moved to New York as a 19-year-old in 1977 and lived in the city for much of her career, only relocating to London in 1997 after falling in love with film director Guy Ritchie, who she wed three years later.

Now Madonna has revealed she turned her back on Manhattan because the city is no longer the vibrant centre of the arts it once was.

She tells Vanity Fair magazine, "New York City is not the same place it used to be. It still has great energy. I still put my finger in the socket.

"But it doesn't feel alive, crackling with that synergy between the art world and music world and fashion world that was happening in the '80s."

Hey Madge, where are you going to live when you and Guy split up?

i'd love to visit new york, LA and the rest of the US, unlike madge.

though can you imagine the reaction she would've got had she been living in new york and saying the exact same thing? i don't think that new york, or most of america have missed madonna since she left for the uk to live in london and settle down with guy richie

I know I haven't shed a tear during her absence.

for a split second reading the title, I thought Madonna was making a commentary about the reality dating star

Unfortunately, I think you're right, judging by how her career in the States is nowhere near the bright star it once was. But, to be fair, no place in the world is as bright and vibrant as it was during those wonderful, salad days that spanned the 1960s through the 1980s, including London. New York did have a special, unique vibrancy during the 80s, but the world has changed significantly since then. That would be like comparing the swinging 60s Carnaby Street London to the London of today... it's still an awesome city, but it just isn't the same...

in all fairness, I think Madonna's doing as good as a 1980's pop icon can do in 2008 in the youth-obsessed America. The woman will be fifty this year, and is actually getting airplay with her new song (even tho it's perfectly obvious that was what she was aiming for). When you think of the other 80's superstars who still record... MJ, U2, Janet, Whitney, Prince, Springsteen, REM, etc... not one of them is able to score hits the way they could in the 80's and early 90's. US radio is obsessed with youth, but the bulk of those have transitioned into veteran acts. Same with Madonna, the fact she can still have a #2 single in 2008 is amazing for someone whose first hit since was in 1983 and people thought was going to be a flash in the pan. I understand and agree with you tho, about the US market vs. the UK market where Confessions On A Dance Floor was a massive blockbuster and "Hung Up" and "Sorry" are two of her biggest singles ever. But still, all things considered, I think Madonna is doing good for herself and Americans still love her, just that radio programmers don't.

Gee, what happened to New York that disagreed with her? That new station (WRXP-FM) playing the very music (guitar rock) she sought to wipe off the face of the earth with her synthesized dance music??

I know an aspiring British dancer living in New York. She prefers it to London.

Madonna is a multi milionaire who has the Reebok Sports Club shut down so she can work out alone.

What does she know about the "real" New york anymore?
