Default After seeing Alice in it's nearly entire run on ION, I have made these observations..

...about the characters

Alice, Vera, Jolene, and Henry were not only annoying, but very unlikable. They all were mouthy, out of place many times ungrateful, and unappreciatetive. Vera as time went by started back talking Mel and wouldn't listen. Her ugly ass deserved that nerd of a cop she married. Alice deserved to be lonely, she was bossy and was always up in somebody elses business. Jolene should have got her ass fired, she took way too many shots at Mel's cooking. And Henry should have kept his butt out of the diner if the food was that bad to him. Mel probably had more money than him...he owned his own business, and Henry was a phone company employee.

Mel, Flo, Tommy and Belle were the best characters. Mel was the glue to the show, Flo was a spark plug for the show, Belle was a rock solid replacement who was seasoned and didn't get utilized right. Tommy was a bright kid who didn't earned his mother's trust when in reality, he had more sense than her.

Good observations, Gar!

I know one thing........my opinion of the later seasons has changed since last seeing the reruns on TNN.....I really don't like them that much anymore. Jolene has grated my last nerve and Mel was bashed for his cooking WAY TOO MANY TIMES!

Man, how I miss Flo!

At least Flo gave Mel a good time weekend that one time they were a couple. The other girls just gave Mel grief at times.

Flo's mission in life was to give as much joy as possible

I really need to watch the movie again--to catch how many things the movie and TV show did have in common--such as Mel and Flo's relationship in the movie!

Well, they weren't going to get lucky with Alice, that's for sure. And no one wanted Vera. Poor Vera. Belle seemed a great choice, but she was gone too soon. Jolene had her fill of that one trucker she worked with.

Mel was by far the best character on the show. Vic Tayback RULED!! Garfield, your points are right on.

The first four seasons of Alice was good, especially season 3, but when the problems with Linda Lavin and Polly Holliday began surfacing to a point that it filtered into the screen during Polly's last season of the show. Linda was constantly rolling her eyes at Polly especially when she got a laugh.

When Belle came along the same problem occurred between Diane Ladd and Linda Lavin. Linda began to push her weight around the show and it was projected on screen.

When Jolene came the show started going downhill and it got progressively worse as the seasons went.

When Linda Lavin cut her hair her portrayal of Alice wasn't the same and she got on my nerves getting into eveyone's business. Also, I noticed on the show when there was singing going on when Linda was on the screen she would drowned everyone out. In the episode at Eliott and Vera's apartment when they were singing I Got Rhythm you can Linda over everyone.

This was a series should had ended after season 5. They literally was squeezing blood out of a turnup by keeping the show on for nine years.

How many times can the diner get destroyed??? It seemed like at least once a season the diner would get destroyed and the next episode it was back together.

^ I agree about the diner always being destroyed. I'd hate to see poor Mel's insurance premiums. Yikes!
