The last episode dealt with the fact that Mama Carlson wasn't convinced that the rock format had improved the station's fortunes and was determined to sell it, but Andy, somehow managed to convince her not to sell it. It was all very vague as to what Andy had agreed to do for Mama Carlson, in order for her to keep the station going. I don't think the producers were actually expecting cancellation, but still it is a very interesting point at which the series was stopped. (Not counting anything that happened on The New WKRP).

it wasn't Andy who convinced her; it was Johnny. In the first episode; she said that she would try the rock-and-roll format "for now". In the finale though; the deadline was up. She wanted to drop it; but; like I said; Johnny convinced her not to.

ok, thanks for the correction--been so long since I've seen WKRP. Glad I at least remembered something of the details

Still curious as to HOW Johnny convinced her

I don't really remember; as the only time I saw it was years ago when NICK AT NITE used to show it. But, I remember that it WAS Johnny.

Johnny figured out that the station was making money, and Momma Carlson hadn't wanted that in actuality. She was using it as a write-off. So she wanted to change the format to something that would start to fail.

So Johnny asked her how she thought her son (Mr. Carlson) would feel about that and about her confidence in him.

Momma Carlson never would intentionally hurt Arthur, so she backed off.

Johnny: This is so deeply warped even I get it! KRP is not supposed to make money! That's the deal! We're set up to lose, but we didn't. And that's why you're changing the format. So you can lose money for two more years!
Momma: Good night.
Johnny: You are telling your own son that you want him to be the general manager of the number one station in the market, and you'd be happier if it was sixteenth. How do you think he'd feel if he knew?
Hirsch, suddenly appearing: A very interesting turn, don't you think?
