Grandmother hospitalized in oven explosion
Police: Children put aerosol cans inside By Macollvie Jean-Francois | South Florida Sun-Sentinel March 25, 2008 Pompano Beach - A 54-year-old grandmother was hospitalized after the children she was baby-sitting put aerosol spray cans into an oven, causing the appliance to explode and burn her, authorities said Monday. The explosion happened Saturday about 7:25 p.m. in an apartment in the 100 block of Southwest Eighth Street, city spokeswoman Sandra King said. The woman was baby-sitting five children, ages 1 to 4. Three of them were her grandchildren. One of the children put two aerosol spray cans into the oven, King said. The oven was turned on and the cans exploded, blowing off the oven's door, and sending flames across the woman's legs, arms and chest, King said. The fire then spread to other parts of the kitchen. Neighbors in the complex heard two explosions from the second-floor apartment and called 911. Paramedics arrived and took the woman to North Broward Medical Center. She then was transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital's burn center in Miami for further treatment, King said. Firefighters extinguished the kitchen fire and found one burned spray can on the floor and the other in the oven. The state fire marshal's office has not determined which child put the cans into the oven or who turned on the oven, State Fire Marshal spokesman Lt. Joseph Schwartz said. The agency referred the youngsters, who were not hurt, to the Broward County Juvenile Fire Setters Intervention program, to teach them about the dangers of fires and explosives. Schwartz said he did not have the victim's name. Her injuries were not life-threatening, he said. Link |

Oh wow. I hope everyone looks in their oven before they turn it on, that is so dangerous. I've made it a habit now, when i was younger i preheated the oven without looking and there was a pizza box in it
Thankfully i got it out before it set fire.

Yeah, I know, check your ovens FIRST. Sometimes someone may put something in there like you said.

Yeah, i have and i felt like kicking myself all day
It was my dad's fault though, everytime we order a pizza, he leaves the leftovers inside the pizza box and puts it in the oven. So people, don't use your oven for storage.
