Man finds mine full of gold, blows it up - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I'm reaching into the dark corners of my mind, and I am recalling a story from the early 90's of a man who stumbled upon either a mine or a cave that had lots of gold in it. I can't recall the details, but the opening was hard to access or something, so he blew it up and ended up accidently burying the treasure or something. I think the story may have been that the location of this treasure is now a mystery. Any bells ringing?

The case sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't recall it's name. In general, however, this leads me to something I've been meaning tosuggest for awhile:

CD, should there be a future volume of favorite collections, how about some "Lost Treasure" segments? I know that some were included on the "Best of" commercial release, but from what I understand, most of what's on those disks can be found on the prioe themed collections --- strange legends, bizarre murders, etc. Since I'm sure most of us don't want to buy that set just for the lost treasure segments, it would be dreamy to get a bunch of them on one of your collections. I remember being particularly fond of the one with the "ciphers" that supposedly led to the treasure (even though that entire story is, in all probability, a hoax perpetrated long ago).

^ I've asked her about a "Treasure" set before. I think in our conversation she mentioned that she didn't have enough of these to scratch out an entire volume devoted to Treasure segments. It would be a good set to do although I don't know if anyone bothered to preserve a lot of these (I know I didn't).

I guess putting together a listing of all the treasure segments and seeing what is what would be a good first step.

I think this was the case of "Doc" Noss and his wife Ova ("Babe"). The mine was on a New Mexico mountain named Victorio Peak.

Yes I do remember this case. But I also don't remember the details either.

Must have been hard to have found all that gold only to blow up the cave wrong. But you'd think that with all that gold that he would have found a way to get to it.

He should have rented some construction equipment and kept digging till he got to the gold.

If I remember right, this was back in the early-mid 20's.......so that would've been kinda hard to do

This description is most certainly the Victorio Peak buried treasure.

I wouldn't mind seeing the uncut version of this episode. There was apparently a story about anther man who claims he saw the treasure, but this segment got deleted so they could put in that lengthy update about Captain Swanner's allegations and the government's standard issue denial.

This was one of the few treasure segments that I thought was most likely actually true. There was a ton of evidence that something was there and that the government covered it up.

several years ago I did some online pooking around into this case since I too felt that it was once of the most compelling treasure stories ever aired. I found that as late as 2002 the family was STILL digging in and around Victoria Peak, however, their troubles with the military had never gone away.
Indeed, the offcicial website of the family's stated, in 2004 I think, that the military had once again blocked their access to the peak and they saw very little chance of getting back in.

NOTE: as of the date the peak was closed off, they still had found nothing.

Interesting. I don't really understand why the government would prohibit them from digging since the military no doubt took all the valuables out decades ago. You figure they would just let them have at it since there's nothing left and then they would be done with it.

Well, I don't think they ever mentioned that the US Military was actually helping to pay for the diggings. I recall they had to improve the road leading up to the peak among other things. I haven't gone back to check the site since sometime in 2004, but I don't think anything will have changed.

Who owns the land now? I thought it was under the government's control.

I think it was implied on UM that the family had discovered some evidence of the government's (illegal) excavations, and as a result, the family was going to prepare a lawsuit(?) Perhaps the military doesn't want to chance them going back and finding more.

It's more complicated than that. Victorio Peak IS on land owned by the US Military and is part of the White Sands complex. Sometime in the 50s the military "aquired" the land. As is often the case, UM had to leave out many details of this case, and some of them change the complextion of the story a good deal. The issue of the land ownership is just one of them. When I get a chance I'll do some more poking around to see if anything has changed.
