"Live At Carnegie Hall 1977" CD
On June 3, 1977, one month prior to the recording of The Stranger album, Billy and his band performed at the historical Carnegie Hall in NYC. This show has been brilliantly restored to be released for the first time as part of the 30th Anniversary edtion of The Stranger

"The Old Grey Whistle Test" DVD
Billy Joel made a special appearance on BBC2 television music show "The Old Grey Whistle Test" in early 1978 during the promotion for The Stranger album. The show is approximately 60 minutes and aired only once on BBC2. The Old Grey Whistle Test was an influential BBC2 television music show that ran from September 1971 to 1987. The Old Grey Whistle Test was also the template for what later became MTV.

rofl, since when do you like Billy? I remember a long time ago you said he was just a poor man's Elton, or was it like Prince where you ended up getting deeper into the catalog?

Both actually.

Well, I never disliked Prince, I just thought he was way overrated. Then when I heard more of his music, I discoverd that I was mistaken. I used to hate Billy with a passion. Then all of a sudden I just had a change of heart, I guess. I started to really like his music and I think The Stranger is his best. Followed by The Nylon Curtain. I actually perfer Billy over Elton now.

If any of you aren't familiar with Billy Joel's c. 1977 live sound, it's way different than his current one. A lot more intimate sounding.

is Billy ever coming back? The man is not getting younger. I can see where he doesn't want to make a total mockery of his career like Rod Stewart has, but surely he still has a good album in him ever 3-4 years like Elton or McCartney still do.

The Stranger is a great album.

I'll have to dig my CD out tomorrow and have a listen.

Yeah, The Stranger is a sentimental favorite of mine.

Believe it or not, I have fond memories of falling asleep to side 2 a few times in my bed or crib as a very young child, especially "Everybody Has A Dream" and the uncredited reprise of the title track at the end. There was something soothing about those songs, along with the cracks and pops from the record.

Later, as a pre-teen, I would listen to the side 1 of the cassette, ad nauseum, while playing NES games with the sound on my TV off.

When my oldest brother got married in 2001, the mother/son dance was to "Vienna."

My family and I have collectively owned the album on 8-track, vinyl, cassette, CD (original and 1998 remaster) and SACD. This will still be a welcome addition to my collection.

That's really cool how you own all of the editions.

I probably won't pick this up, but I love the album, and I already have it on CD. Billy is one of my favorite artists. Our marching band also had a show a few years ago full of Billy Joel songs.

Ah yes, Vienna. An underappreciated gem.

That song reminds me of a "crazy child" I used to know from the old days and introduced to the music of Billy Joel.
