Was Step By Step A 90's Ripoff of The Brady Bunch? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I am not knocking the show at all, just curious what other people's opinions are. The concept was VERY similar to that of the Brady Bunch.

No I really don't think so because the brady bunch was set in the 70's and step by step was set in the 90's so they had different issues that they talked about. Also they didn't have anyone like Cody just cousin Oliver. And the kids instead of having the 3 girls for Carol the 3 guys for Frank they had Mark for Carol and Al for Frank. So any many ways it seemed like the same show but when you really pick it apart there are a lot of differences as well.

Personally, I think Marcia is not as pretty as Karen, IMO.

In a way, yes, I would say so. But I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. Even if the gender of the children is not exactly the same, the premise mostly is. Also, the fact that SBS was in the 90's has nothing to do with how they are different, because obviously it's going to be updated with the times.

The blended family concept was also done after TBB in "Brand New Life", a shortlived Barbara Eden/Don Murray Disney series for NBC and "True Colors" a two season Fox sitcom, this one doing it interracial style.

Some people refer to the show as "The Brady Bunch of the 90's" but it is really different.

The only similarity I see is a mom with 3 kids, marries a dad with 3 kids. Many differences include, the families don't get along (TBB only had this a little in season 1) The kids treat their step parents like they're their step parents. They don't call them mom or dad. The episodes are very diffrent, The Camping one's the only one similar, but the premise is kind of diffrent. On SBS the mom and dad married each other on a whim, a week after meeting each other for the first time on vacation, without any of their kids knowledge. TBB got married after dating a long time, and their kids knew. And the kids were present at the wedding. Also (even though it's only during season 1) the grandma and aunt were a big part of the show. And they had another baby on the show.

Well, I am knocking this show. This show was a cheap, low budget version of the Brady Bunch, and Patrick Duffy = SOFT.

The transitive property of Softness dictates that Patrick Duffy < Mr. Brady, Mr. Brady < Soft, therefore Patrick Duffy = SOFT.

Furthermore, Patrick Duffy also knocked off "Bingo Night in America" with his new show "Bingo".

That, my friend, is soft.

Furthermore, I failed to mention that Patrick Duffy and Mr. Brady both have perms. I am not sure how anyone could get softer than that.... I suppose you could group Richard Simons in with these guys.

There was nothing low budget about this show! They went to a new set in almost all episodes. Plus it had many more cast members= many more paychecks!

While it did take a little bit from The Brady Bunch, I thought the personalities were a lot more vivid on Step By Step though & I really enjoyed S.B.S. for this. Truth be told, on a pure enjoyment level I liked S.B.S. quite a bit more than The Brady Bunch. However I do regard The Brady Bunch as the better show because of its iconic status as fine 70s nostalgia as well as for its durability.

rich p, I suppose I could agree with your argument in that the personalities were much more vivid on step-by-step. Patrick Duffy definately had a vividly softer personality than Mr. Brady. He also had a much more vivid man-perm than Mr. Brady.
