Post It Happened One Day

This is a fan fiction. It is meant to be read for fun. No copyright of Family Ties intended.

Part One: (takes place sometime in Season 7)

Alex strolls into the kitchen, brief case in hand. Dressed in his usual attire, suit jacket, tie, slacks. Smiling from ear to ear. Andy is sitting at the kitchen table with a glass of orange juice in his hand. A Wall Street Week and Ronald Reagan coloring books are opened on the table. A box of crayons next to them.

Alex: Andy! Just the person I wanted to see. I have a surprise for you.

Alex opens his brief case. He pulls out the latest issue of The Wall Street Week.

Alex: Is this great or what? I mean, I've dreamt about this. A multi-million dollar merger. We're talking investments, stocks, portfolios....

Alex runs a hand through his hair.

Alex: I'm getting too excited. Here you hold it.

Andy takes the magazine. He starts reading the caption on the cover.

Andy: The merger of Simco and Trinity Inc. have produced what could possibly be the largest mid-west deal to date. Expected revenue in the billions over the next five years. The merger was for $402 million dollars. The merged companies now will be called Simtrin. See page 14 for details.

Andy looks up at Alex with eyes wide.

Andy: Wow!

Andy and Alex give each other high fives. Jennifer and Mallory enter the kitchen.

Alex: I can't wait to show this to everyone at the bank.

Jennifer: Let me guess, another meeting of the short and pompus is being held right before our eyes.

Alex: Jennifer, Jennifer, Jennifer. If you only had a clue.

Mallory: About what?

Alex: Mallory, the concept would go way over your head.

Mallory: In that case, I'd rather not know. If I have trouble sleeping later, I'll make sure to come see you. That should put me to sleep.

Alex: I resent that.

Andy: Yeah.

The phone rings. Mallory goes over and answers it.

Mallory: Hello?

Nick: Uh, Mal, can you come over? I need to talk to you about something.

Mallory: (hesitates): Ok. What's wrong?

Nick: Maybe it's easier over the phone. You see, I, uh, I'm moving.

Mallory: What? Where?

Nick: My aunt, you know, the one who used to live here? Well, she moved and she's not doing well. I want to go help her. Also, some of my old friends live by her.

Mallory: What about me?

Nick: Well, that's what I was going to talk to you about. We can't stay together.

Mallory: Why not?

Nick: Well....

Mallory: You don't want me to go with you?

Nick: Uh....

Mallory: How can you NOT want me to go?

Nick: It's not your kind of place.

Mallory: What's that supposed to mean?

Nick: Um...

Mallory: Fine. My family and friends are here. You go your way and I'll go mine.

Mallory slams the phone down.

Alex: (raises his eyebrows) What's the matter? Did you miss a sweater sale?

Mallory: It's none of your business.

Alex: Fine, I didn't want to know anyway

Andy: Come on Alex. We can celebrate in my room.

Alex: Well, I thought we could go to the bank and show everyone. Let them see us before we're filthy rich!

Jennifer: What are you babbling about Alex?

Alex: (rubs hands together) : Wait until you hear thiis --

Mallory: No one cares about your stupid money Alex.

Alex: Mallory I'll have you know money isn't stupid. Money is going to make me the happiest man alive!

Mallory: You'll never learn Alex. Happiness isn't about having money.

Alex: Excuse me - I forgot I'm talking to someone who wants to be buried in the mall.

Mallory: So....

Jennifer: Come on Mallory. We'll never get through to Alex. Unless we attach dollar signs to us.

Elyse and Steven enter the kitchen.

Elyse: Ok, so what does everyone want for dinner?

Mallory: I'm not hungry.

Elyse: What's wrong?

Mallory: Nick and I broke up.

Steven: (Overjoyed) : Really?!

Steven runs over to Mallory. He hugs her.

Steven: Wonderful! I have my daughter back! Rambo has left the building! Now quick, lock the doors!

Mallory: Dad! This isn't good news.

Elyse: Why not?

Mallory: See, Nick is moving away. He doesn't want me to go with him. I thought he loved me. He would rather be with his aunt and old friends.

Elyse: Oh honey, I'm sorry. Is there anything I can do?

Mallory: No. Not unless you can talk Nick out of moving.

Steevn: No! Heavens no! Let the boy go.

Elyse: (smacks Steven on the arm) : Steven!

Steven: (rubs his arm) Ouch.

Elyse: You can't stop him. If Nick wants to leave you have to let him go.

Mallory: But we were supposed to be together forever. We were going to get married.

Steven coughs loudly as if he is choking.

Steven: You know, I could help him move.

Alex: Finanically speaking, if you do, charge him.

Jennifer rolls her eyes.

Andy: Dad, make sure he gives you a tip.

Jennifer: Oh great, it looks like Andy is forever corrupted thanks to Alex.

Elyse: Steven, Alex, Andy go in the livingroom. Let us rational women discuss this.

Alex: But--

Elyse: Go.

Steven, Alex and Andy leave the kitchen.

Jennifer: I'm sorry Mallory.

Mallory: I can't believe I lost my boyfriend.

Elyse: I'm sorry you're hurt. If it's any comfort you're a wonderful young lady. People like you. There's bound to be plenty of guys who would jump at the chance to go out with you.

Skippy enters the kitchen.

Jennifer: Here comes one now.

Great job, Jenny. I think Skippy and Mallory will be a very happy couple.
