Default The scoop on BTY's return

BACK TO YOU
APRIL 16 · 8:30 PM · FOX
EPISODES LEFT: 4

WHERE WE LEFT OFF: Anchorman Chuck Darling (Kelsey Grammer) was slowly bonding with daughter Gracie (Laura Morano), who still didn't know he's her dad.

UP NEXT: For starters, the station will get a new owner (Help Me Help You's Suzy Nakamura) who wants to shake things up. And due to the truncated season, Chuck will mature faster than expected, finally buying a house and, after a battle with Gracie's mom, Kelly (Patricia Heaton), telling the teen the truth about his identity. ''We want to get to the heart of these characters,'' says exec producer Steve Levitan. ''And maybe worry a little less about getting to the big wacky joke.'' —Josh Wolk

It sounds like they may be moving this along a bit too fast. There is 8 episodes, though, to work all this in, isn't there?

That's what I thought too. I do like the fact that they will be focusing on fleshing out the characters more, I definitively think that's a good idea. I'm a bit sceptical about Chuck taking matters into his own hands to tell Gracie the truth. I'm curious though to see how writers will handle the story.

Yes, they'll have 8 episodes to work all this in, although only four are scheduled to air now. How knows what will happen to the other 4

I don't like the sounds of that. Why rush? I guess to try and establish these characters, but it is never good to "hot shot" storylines.

Seems like they're rushing to fit everything in this season, just in case they don't come back for another season. Doesn't sound like a good idea, though, because if they rush to fit everything in this season, and they do come back, what will they have in store for next season?

I'm really not worried about future storylines because they certainly have capable writers. I just want the end result to be satisying. I guess if anybody can pull that off, it is Kelsey and Patricia.

They took some heat regarding the whole Gracie storyline. If you think about it so far, in a way or another, everything evolves around Chuck and Kelly's little secret. It's pretty much one dimensional. By getting that secret out of the way, they can start developing stories about their dynamics in the workplace as well as parenting. I mean, how many hot, young girlfriends does Chuck need to have every episode for us to know he is a self centered, womanizer jerk?

I hope they don't make it too serious though. I know the situation is quite dramatic but they have got to find some way to make it funny. As they say comedy comes from drama. I can only imagine what Patty and Kelsey could deliver if they had some decent scripts, or even just physical comedy.Who would want to miss that?

The thing is, once the secret is out (probably in the season finale at this rate) the show will get really serious, even if it is only those last few episodes. But, it really needs to build a fan base or start building a fan base back before they can get that serious in just 8 episodes.
