Was The Gloria character really needed?

I think if Gloria was never cast, I don't think AITF, would've really lost a step. The best part of this show was the dynamic between Archie and Mike.

So, should Mike have been Archie's son instead? How could Mike have been cast if he wasn't married to Gloria?

Gloria kind of got on my nerves sometimes. I could have done without the whining and crying she did. Also her spilling out random facts (like Thelma on Good Times) got to me. Basically any Norman Lear show where that was done was so damn annoying. Too much PSA.
