March 17, 2008 -- 'STAR Wars" creator George Lucas is reportedly at work on a new, live-action TV series with the tantalizing description: "Deadwood" meets "The Sopranos" in outer space.
It will be part of the "Star Wars" saga but without the touchstone characters - like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader - that have been at the heart of the series, according to the sci-fi site, collider.com, which first broke the story late last week. The yet-to-be titled show is one of two new TV series that have been on the planning boards for years - with development ramping up substantially after Lucas finished "Revenge of the Sith," the final installment of the "Star Wars" double trilogy, in 2005. The other show - already well-publicized - is a CGI animated program geared towards kids called "The Clone Wars." It set in between the movies "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith." A full-length film will debut on Cartoon Network in August with an entire series to follow next fall. The live action show is geared towards adults and is described as much darker than the animated one. It is expected that the stories told in this show will unfold during the time between "Revenge of the Sith" and the original "Star Wars" film, "A New Hope." Lucas is reportedly heavily involved in both shows. Both will be considered part of the "official canon" of "Star Wars" mythology. Officials at Lucasfilm declined to comment over the weekend. Gangsters have played a crucial role in "Star Wars" lore since the sci-fi epic first appeared in 1977. Die-hard fans will remind you that one of the tale's biggest heroes, Han Solo, was an intergalactic smuggler pursued by bounty hunters because he owed money to a powerful crime syndicate kingpin, Jabba the Hutt. It is still not clear where the show, which is likely to be extremely expensive to produce, will end up. Sources indicated that Lucas held early talks with HBO executives and other cable channel officials more than a year ago. It is understood that Lucas has also approached at least one other major broadcast network about carrying the show, but has yet to make a deal. http://www.nypost.com/seven/03172008...ing_102320.htm |
