New Site plans hundreds of TV shows online
Link
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hulu.com, a joint venture between News Corp. and NBC Universal, plans to open its vast online library of ad-supported TV shows and movies to the public on Wednesday, the company announced. Users of the service will be able to view more than 250 full-length episodes of shows such as "The Simpsons" and "The Office," as well as some 100 movies, including "The Big Lebowski" and "Ice Age." Short clips from films and TV shows such as "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Saturday Night Live" are also available through the service, which is accessible at Hulu.com, as well as on America Online, Yahoo and other popular Web portals. The public debut of Hulu, which has been available to a test group by invitation since October, comes as studios seek ways to make money providing online content. The entertainment companies behind the service have been feuding with popular online video sites such as YouTube, where unauthorized clips from shows often appear. The Hulu.com programming comes from 50 TV networks, movie studios and Web-based producers of content. Viewers of some movies and TV shows are given a choice of advertisements to watch. |

I heard about this, it looks like competition for youtube. I'll check it out and see if I like the new site.

Which is why I absolutely hate it so much! Yes, you heard it here first: HULU SUCKS!!!!!! I've said this before about AOL's In2TV and it looks like Hulu has followed the same path. If you're going to launch a web site that contains material that you know people will love, and you won't share that material with the rest of the world, then you shouldn't be allowed to operate that site until that oversight is cleared up. In Hulu's case, that could take weeks or even months. Sorry, but I'm not impressed. Now then, if you're looking for a new web site that offers the same types of programming as Hulu, only with lots more to choose from that spans different eras of TV history from the 1950s to today, I have discovered a great new site that has been around for only a few months. It's called Graboid. Its official web page is at Graboid.com but you can find all the information you need about it right here: Graboid Video info In order to see what they have to offer you have to sign up. It's free to join (don't worry, I checked!) and once you're there you can download any TV series or movie you want up to a certain amount each month, then the next month you can start all over again. It would take me a while to explain so you'll have to follow the above link to get all the details and then ask me if you have any further questions (and remember, I was the one who told you about TV4U and how great it is). Just for starters, here's a small sample of some vintage sitcoms that I found that may not be available at other sites: 1950s sitcoms Amos and Andy (77 episodes) Make Room For Daddy (All of Season 5 plus the episode with Andy Griffith) My Little Margie (24 episodes) 1960s Sitcoms Dennis The Menace (all 4 seasons) Family Affair (Seasons 2-5; 108 episodes) Gomer Pyle USMC (Season 2) I Dream Of Jeannie (113 episodes) My Three Sons (11 seasons, 317 episodes!) (one of the main reasons I recommend this site) The Many Loves Of Dobie Gillis (16 episodes from Season 1) (Yes! Finally I can watch Dobie Gillis!) My Mother The Car (the complete series, for those of you who've never seen it) Plus other weird and rare stuff like "Nanny and The Professor", "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir", "H R Pufnstuf" and even a lot of today's favorite sitcoms, anime, and reality series from "American Idol" and "Arrested Development" to "Welcome To The Captain". If you miss something good tonight, it will be on Graboid tomorrow. Now if they can add "The Donna Reed Show" ---another show I've never seen before---I'd be very pleased. That is all. Goodnight folks. |

Is Graboid anything like using torrents? Can you put what you download onto an iPod or Zune? I'm always leery about downloading software I'm not sure about because I don't want a virus.

If it did have viruses, I wouldn't use it at all. Whenever I find a new site that I want to visit on a regular basis, I first check out a few things. 1. Is it free to use without any restrictions? 2. Can I watch the videos at home? Sometimes you'll need a special plug-in device to watch the videos on. That's no problem for me since it takes very little time to install. 3. Are the videos available in Canada? 4. Will I be seeing pop-up ads all over the place every time I visit? That's how I can usually tell if a site is unsafe to use. Another sign is if using the site for downloading slows down your computer to almost a crawl. In each case, I go there once and never come back. Regarding your question about downloading to iPods and other mp3 players, here's what it says on Graboid's home page. "Download any video in our database for viewing or burning later." That sounds fairly clear to me. Good luck. I hope you like it. Graboid Features Page |

Sal, there's only one thing wrong with Graboid. There's no Gilligan's Island episodes. Wait, make it two. There aren't any Three's Company episodes from seasons 2-8 either.
Otherwise, the site rocks! Thank you! |
