Boulder, Colo. -- A Boulder woman said she will fight a $1,000 fine she was given for dyeing her miniature poodle pink.

Joy Douglas she dyed Cici pink to help raise awareness for breast cancer. The salon owner said she has used beet juice -- and occasionally Kool-Aid -- for four years now to "stain" her dog.

Officials at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley told the Daily Camera Douglas was warned several times before she was issued the ticket on March 1.

Douglas is accused of violating the city's code, which says, "No person shall dye or color live fowl, rabbits, or any other animals." It is meant to keep people from dyeing rabbits and chicks at Easter.

"I can understand something done in large vats and it's not done with a lot of animal care by people who don't know their animals," Douglas told Denver television station KMGH. "But I have a personal connection to my animal. I would never hurt my animal. I have a business full of little beautiful animals that are treasures for not only myself, but the community."

Douglas is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. She said she plans to fight the ticket, claiming her dog is helping to raise awareness for an important issue.

"Cici is being stripped of her civic duty," Douglas said. "And I don't plan to take it sitting down."

Cici is actually the second dog Douglas has dyed pink.

Douglas first dyed her white poodle Lulu four years ago when the dog accompanied her to a haircutting fundraiser for breast cancer research.

The hairstylist said people would bring "fistfuls of cash" just to pet the dog, so she kept up the dye job. She only used organic products, and said she has even worked with an organic pet company on developing safe dyes for pets.

When Lulu died just over a year ago, Douglas found Cici and immediately began coloring the new poodle's hair as well.

The night before her court hearing, Douglas told the station she plans to put the attention she has received from getting the ticket to good use by raising money for breast cancer research.

"With every big gathering of people, there's a lot of ears and one voice that can be heard at a time," she said. "So I'm going to use my voice to raise as much funds and make as much good come out of this unfortunate incident."

she sounds like a thick-headed idiot who thinks she's above the law. it doesn't matter how silly the rule was, she was violating a city code and warned several times before the fine. you don't follow the rules, you face the consequences, the end.

Well, if it's a law, it's the law. You could question why something like this would even exist, but again, it's a law.

hmm. that's an interesting law. i can see why it was created, but at the same time this lady didn't seem to be using chemicals or anything harmful. but the law is the law so she should be fined. she should've gotten the poodle a pink sweater & a pink bow instead and saved herself 1,000 buckeroos. lol.

She is using KOOLAID and beet juice, and if these ingredients pose no health risk to the dog, i dont see what the problem is. If she was using anything else that is potentially harmful, then yeah, slam her with a fine. But they should've left her alone about this one.

I think if the law doesn't state this already, it should be not to use a harmful chemical on the dog when dying it. They should cut people who use safe ingredients some slack. Apparently she's not cruel, the dog was alive and unharmed wasn't it?

Hmm, although she is using things that are not toxic to the dog, the law is still the law, no matter how silly it is.

Yes, technically she did break the law but what the situation really points out is that the law is not well written and needs revision to address/exclude harmless dyes. IMO, they should cut her some slack and fine her a much smaller amt like $50 or fine her and then suspend the fine.

In the meantime, the idea InspectorExstead put forth sounds just as effective as the dye. Smart thinking InspectorExstread!

Laws are interesting things. If they had to make something a law, it probably means they caught someone doing it at one time. Which is pretty scary to me, because there's a law here in Alabama that states you cannot have sex with a porcupine! Who the hell attempted that?!

According to the Daily Camera, the citation against Joy Douglas will be dismissed in six months if she doesn't dye another dog before then.

Douglas told the Camera that the case has been dropped, but she needed to talk with her attorney before making any comments.

The case isn't over, said officials with the city's municipal court, and if Douglas is accused of dyeing animals again before October, she could face penalties for the original charge.

Douglas was issued a citation on March 1 for violating a law saying, "No person shall dye or color live fowl, rabbits or any other animals or have in possession, display, sell or give away such dyed or colored animals."

Douglas said she colored Cici pink to help raise awareness for breast cancer. The salon owner said she has used beet juice -- and occasionally Kool-Aid -- for four years now to "stain" her dog.

Assistant City Attorney Janet Michels said the law was intended to prevent dyeing rabbits and chicks around Easter.

"We recognize the ordinance hasn't been used in some time," she told the Camera. "But our position is that the ordinance is enforceable for violations of today."

Still, she said, "We are trying to find a solution that works for everyone."

It really sounds like a silly law, like the one in France saying a pig can't be named "Napoleon", or the one in Florida saying women aren't allowed to go parachuting on Sundays, or why not the one in Alabama about not having sex with porcupines! Even if I think dying a poodle's hair is stupid, I think this woman did it with tender love and care, and most poodles are used to beauty care anyway, so it shouldn't be a crime.

Yes they do.

They say it can eventually harm the skin underneath the fur. Some animals have a reaction to the dye.
