Default Nell Carter insult

Excuse me if theres already a thread on this. But I was watching the episode No No,We Wont't Go on DVD this mourning and I thought that remark that Margaux said about Nell Carter was awful and uncalled for. What was the reason for the writers to write that line into the show? What did Nell do some thing to tick them off?

And she is still being insulted in 2008 and is not even alive anymore. In some stupid movie that came out a month ago-"Roscoe jenkins" there was a line in the movie that went like this after a guy walks in on a heavyset in the shower-"I thought Nell Carter was dead Gimme a Break"

So what was the insult on the punky brewster episode?

I'm sorry but both insults are uncalled for. Nell Carter deserves respect like anyone else. The second insult is just a cruel fat joke. I thought society would be past that by now.

Punky and her friends wanted to handcuff themselfs to something to protest the rent increase from Margaux's dad who ownd the building.Punkys ideal is to protest by handcuffing themselfs inside Margaux's dad's office. And they was looking for something big and Margaux saids "If Nell Carter was here we could handcuff are selves to her"And then she made a wisecrack about her wieght. And Punky smilled. For a show that was made for children that was down right awful.

This is probably the reason why because they made fun of Punky Brewster on an episode of Gimme A Break from TV.com it was in the episode Mama

Mama: The good news is, I'll wake up in the morning, hear the birds singing, smell the flowers, and at night, I won't have to watch "Punky Brewster"

Punky Brewster was a sitcom on NBC about a little girl who was abandoned by her mother, and taken in as a foster child by a grouchy old man. Supposedly the producers of Punky Brewster weren't too happy with this, and to get even, it was said that in an episode of Punky Brewster, they used Nell Carter's name in a commercial that Punky was watching on TV which goes "Now on sale, Nell Carter's work out." (edit)

Wow, that's terrible that they targeted Nell Carter about her weight (in a not so subtle way) like that! And people don't understand why overweight people are ridiculed so much in this country. Look at the example they are setting!

Later in the episode Mama said, "To tell you the truth I even like watching Punky Brewster. You know, she is a cute little girl!"

I guess the writers of Punky Brewster either didn't watch the whole episode or they thought that the second line about their show wasn't enough to soften the blow of the first.

Totally forgot that I had replied to this before but it seems that both shows were in the wrong if they insulted each other. That's just juvenile, IMO.

They had another dig at Nell in the Christmas Episode when Punky Shoplifts. The Voiceover Guy in the Shopping Mall makes some lame joke about her.

That's not why the insult took place. During the 1985-1986 season of Gimmie A Break, Mother Harper makes that comment about Punky Brewster. The joke about Nell on Punky Brewster happened during the end of the 1987-1988 season.

I always thought that that joke was uncalled for. Leave that woman alone.

Nell Carter was insulted a few times on The Steve Harvey Show. For example, I forget which episode it was, but Cedric was talking to Steve about something that was wrong, and I remember he said "that's like Nell Carter wearing Daisy Dukes....it's just WRONG!"
