Miley to Perform on American Idol

March 4, 2008 -- TV'S biggest charitable endeavor this side of the Jerry Lewis Telethon returns next month when "Idol Gives Back" airs April 9 on Fox.

Last year's first-ever "Idol Gives Back" raised $76 million with performances and/or appearances from Celine Dion, Gwen Stefani, Josh Groban and Helen Mirren, among many others.

Ellen DeGeneres hosted the telethon portion of last year's show, with "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest hosting the musical performances along with show judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson.

As with last year's event, all proceeds from this two-hour "Idol Gives Back" (8-10 p.m./Ch. 5) will benefit US charities that deliver support to underprivileged children around the country (medical care, groceries and literacy programs).

Funds will also go to organizations in Africa to benefit health and education programs there and to help battle poverty.

This year's star-studded event will feature, among others, Brad Pitt, U2's Bono (who also appeared in last year's version), Fergie, John Legend, "Hannah Montana" star Miley Cyrus and Mariah Carey.

More artists are expected to be announced at a later date.

The event is the brainchild of "Idol" creator/executive producer Simon Fuller.

Last year's show had a powerful effect on viewers - including Seattle Seahawks running back Shawn Alexander, a regular "American Idol" viewer who was so touched by "Idol Gives Back" that he cut a check for $50,000.

With the $76 million raised last year, "Idol Gives Back" has become TV's biggest charitable endeavor, in terms of total dollars raised.

Jerry Lewis' MDA Telethon raised an estimated $64 million last Labor Day weekend - a new record for the annual event.
