Matthew McConaughey - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I was just browsing the "other" UM board and I saw yet another thread that was asking about his involvement in UM. Does it bother anyone else that McConaughey is now and will forever be associated with UM?

I never thought the segment was all that great, and Lifetime repeated it about two hundred thousand times, which didn't help change my disposition, and it ended up in the bizarre murder dvd collection too.

why would it "bother" anyone that someone involved with a reenactment went on to become a big star? Hell, the FOL and Roseanne fans (of which I am both) are both proud to have George Clooney as part of their histories.

I think I get what you're saying JS. Meaning that some people think of UM and they immediately think of McConaughey and he was such a miniscule part of the show. They could have hired any Joe Blow from off the street and it would have meant the same thing to all of us UM fans. I've never heard him mention himself being on there in interviews and I can't blame him for it should be remembered not as McConaughay's acting debut but as one of the worst acting jobs I've ever seen on UM. I think the only reason the Larry Dickens segment even made it to the Bizarre Murders segment is because McConaughey was on there and they were probably hoping that would help them sell a few more sets.

I'm not crazy about his bit part defining any part of UM. But as Irene said, in perspective, it's not so bad.

If it was between Matthew and the fertility statues for the legacy of UM, he wins in a landslide. . .

CD gets what I'm saying. Forever more we'll have the groupies, who could care less about UM otherwise, coming around and asking what segment McConaughey was in.

I hear what you are saying, too. And while aggravating, I'll take that if it means UM and this forum go on.

I once met Alex Trebek and told him that I loved his appearance on Cheers. He got all weird and said, "Jeopardy is on in many countries on a daily basis, and all some people seem to remember is that I was once on Cheers. That was a long time ago..." Whatever, dude. You're a game show host -- deal with it.

I get the groupie factor, but again, it's a small price to pay IMHO.

hey, if Matthew's association with the show helps get it back in reruns or sells some DVD's, that's a good thing, right?

I still don't see why any fan wouldn't like that a bit actor became a star years later. Like I said earlier, take Roseanne and Facts Of Life fans, both are proud that those shows were stepping stones for George Clooney to become who he is now.

Well McConaughay's association with the show never got it reran and as far as everyone has reported the boxed set sales were extremely low so he didn't help in that regard either. It all depends on how you look at it, some say whatever it takes to get UM noticed is good and others think UM needs to be noticed for the great service it did in helping catch fugitives, finding missing persons and reuniting loved ones in addition to providing entertainment to its viewers not for an acting part on it that lasted all of about 5 minutes.

With or without Matthew, I think UM has more than enough to stand on its own.

I remember never missing an episode of UM during its first run and trying to catch it during syndication. Believe me, there are many forgettable tv programs, but UM is not one them, regardless of who was a part of it or not.

Some good points have been made in this thread. I think us UM fans are a different breed in that we care about the show for reasons you can't really associate with any old sitcom. It's awesome knowing that families were reunited, fugitives caught and injustices wronged due in large part to the show. The fact that McConaughey was involved in a single re-enactment means zilch to the average UM fan. So yes, it does pain me a little to see his name come up whenever some clueless reviewer writes about the show or DVD set, or when someone who has never once posted about any of the cases comes on here and asks about his involvement.

IIRC, one of my first posts was about Matthew McConnaughey and his role on UM. I was a UM fan long before I was a MMcC fan. It was just a matter of, "Hey! I never noticed that was MMcC! That guy's an A-List actor now!" And then I discovered this message board, and the rest is history.

Is there something in particular that irks you about him, Justin? Is it his penchant for playing bongo drums in the nude in the privacy of his own home? His shirtless appearances in Us Weekly? His love of the ganga? His shameless championing of all things involving the University of Texas, which just happens to be the greatest school on the planet?

In any case, I sure hope this issue isn't keeping anyone up at night. Both UM and MMcC could've done a lot worse.

It sounds like you have a dislike for the man and are very irked by anyone coming to this board and asking abt what episode he was in.

I only found out a year ago that he was on UM but it wasn't like this "OMG he was on UM!"

It was more like this, "Oh."

I don't even care for the man, I probably wouldn't even know him if I passed him on the street. I just know that he is a good actor.
