Default Can you call 911 over dogs?

The one night I decide to try to go to sleep early (well, early for me), two dogs in the yard behind me decide to bark back and fourth (the ones I wished the pythons on earlier) and even with a humidifier and air purifier turned at full blast, it can't drown the ****ing mongrels out. Since it is 4 am and people are trying to sleep, is it wrong to try 911?

I don't know the laws, and I'm too tired to google now, lol. I would think that there's a noise ordinance in place. I mean, the mutts are disturbing the peace. I know where I live, people can't use an electric mower until 9am. That's to stop someone getting up early, full of energy and decide to crank up the mower at 6:30.

I say try 911. They'll tell you one one or the other. When you call, they'll ask if it's an emergency, just say no to that. Let me know what happens.

Good luck, I live 3 houses away from a couple that raises dogs and I know exactly what you're going through.

well, they've been quiet for the past 10 mins (did someone else call?) and I'm getting supersleepy so who knows.... if they try anything again this morning, I'll call. They can be annoying and loud in the afternoons too, but in the afternoon people are usually up and about, most people are trying to sleep at 4 am on a Wednesday night because they have work, school, etc... (even tho people who work nights sleep in the daytime too, food for thought).

I have a feeling karma decided to piss me off and get me back earlier for saying that I'd like to sik that dog-eating python on the dogs in the yard behind me

15 mins quiet, I have a feeling the owners woke up by the noise and for a second actually had consideration for other neighbors.

This makes me realize why I am such a night owl, those dogs are never barking at 6 am, but at 3-4 am, they're like animals in heat. The part that bothers me is that I use those machines mainly so I can have noise to sleep (I am a very light sleeper, when I was a kid and there was no AC on, I could wake up if there was a footstep in the hall... so many times I would be paranoid we're having a break-in by the slightest sound and would go double-check the locks ), but even that noise couldn't drown them out.

Oh well, fingers crossed the dogs won't make any noise until about 10 am, I need some rest because I have a test tomorrow

Oh, i know all to well what you're goin through. My house is located in a neighborhood, and there is a whole other neighborhood on the other side that i can see from my bedroom window. At least 1 night a week, there is one dog in particular (i think) who barks and barks and barks. The problem is, with so many houses, there is no way i can find who has the dog so i can yell at them. People are such morons though, you can't hear that your dog is obviously barking his lungs out? You dont think people will get annoyed and possibly come and shoot the dog (I'm an animal lover but sometimes i get so mad and tired i feel like doing it..lol) or call the police? How hard is it to take the barking dog and put him in your house? That way if he barks, we might not hear it as much. It's your dog and if he chooses to bark all night in your house, that is your problem. You must stay awake and deal with it.

I go through this almost every night, but I can't say anything because it's my dog that's barking We live in the County, so our neighbors are pretty nice about it. They ought to be though, it's their dog that makes mine bark!

She's such a sweet dog though, I mean, look at her!

Your police department should have a non-emergency line. We do. That's the number I call when I want to report a noise problem, parking situation, etc.

Don't call 911 for a barking dog(s) since operators have to take the calls you might find yourself in hot water for it, however you should try to find the number for you local police precinct or animal control. Where I use to live my I had problems with humans keeping me up at night I called my local precinct and they sent someone out. It took a while but the police did come out and I didn't tie up 911 from more important calls.

You're are not going to get in hot water for calling 911 if you have a legit beef. Dean has one , it's called disturbing the peace. The problem with calling the local precinct is those calls are often ignored. When you dial 911 the Police have to respond to the call.

You NEVER phone 911 for anything other than EMERGENCIES. Barking dogs hardly come under that umbrella. Loss of sleep might be nasty for you - but in the meantime, someone's having a heart attack - or being stapped or raped and you're tying up the lines and police with yappy dogs?
I guarantee you that you'll be charged.

Yes, phone the police if it's after 11pm or midnight, but use the regular phone number for them (it'll be in the front of your phone book or you can look it up on the internet).

People that use 911 for stupid reasons about their neighbours etc. not only undermine the reason 911 is available, but really irritate me. Plus, it's illegal.

Big deal - try sleeping with an overweight snorer and a cat in heat for 10 years. Then you'll know what sleep deprivation really is.

Oh yes he will - its not considered a legitimate beef unless itls life threatening - maybe if the dogs were attacking him or his family, but they're just barking.

People - there ARE regular phone numbers to your local police stations - not just 911.

And not only that, it should be Animal Control who's called - not the police.

Thank you. Thank God someone else knows the proper way of handling a simple noise complaint.

Oy vey. No, you never call 911 unless yours or someone elses life is in danger. As others have said, call the local number for your police department.

Things like these must be why some 911 operators have a hard time distinguishing between what calls are to be taken seriously, and which ones are prank calls, or just someone calling for any reason. And this is just one situation on SitcomsOnline. Imagine how many calls like this they receive.
