Default Get Steve - - Carell talks about the new Get Smart movie

Last week, The Office's Steve Carell attended WonderCon 2008, talking about his new movie Get Smart. The picture, which is based on the 1965 NBC (and later CBS) TV series of the same name, will be appearing in theaters around the country on June 20, 2008. While saying that he tried not to channel Don Adams's performance so he could bring something different to the role, in an IESB.net interview with Carell, he said that before he got the part of Maxwell Smart, Agent 86, of CONTROL, both Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell were considered. The film had actually been in development for nearly a decade. Steve recalled going to Warner Brothers for a reading about three years ago. "It was the most surreal moment, because I went in thinking I was just going to audition for a role. I didn't expect them to offer me the part of Maxwell Smart."

From what i've read, they have totally changed Max and his relationship with 99, I won't be seeing this insult to one of my top 5 sitcoms of all time

Yep, I won't be wasting any time or money on this garbage either. This will just be a modern movie done in poor taste with foul language, over the top special effects and a guy trying to act like Don Adams. It is an insult towards the original series and a slap in the face for it's fans. Loyal Get Smart fans should avoid this crap and stay with the original series.

If they want to make a Get Smart movie in good taste, they should have Carell play the role of Max's son, create a different character for the female lead and stay as faithful as possible to the original series while still making a modern movie. Resurrecting the 86 and 99 characters with new actors is a bad idea, it will not work and regardless the movie will be in terribly poor taste.

I agree with you Lee, either change the characters as you say, or, if you have to use Max & 99, keep them as they were in the original series

I agree. I don't think I'll be seeing this one, especially if they change Max and 99's relationship. That's the main reason why I watched the series. While I respect Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway as actors, I don't think I'd like the movie. Mainly because I'd want to see Don Adams and Barbara Feldon in the roles, even though I know that couldn't happen.

I saw the new trailer online last night, and I thought it looked pretty good. Steve Carell is a funny guy.

Well, with all due respect to Steve Carell (Who I loved on the Daily Show, I might add); what I object to is the characterisations of Max as a computer nerd and 99 berating him for his inexperience and stupidity....the whole idea was that 99 encourages Max, making him a better agent, and which made them a perfect working team......can you imagine if the 60s 99 had treated Max that way? KAOS would be running the world today!

I am not planning on seeing this movie, either. I have seen both trailers and even read a detailed discription. And they certainly have *completely* changed Max and 99's characters. (let alone the show)

99 joining CONTROL first? 99 not wanting Max as a partner? 99 slugging him?
Not getting along? (give me a break!) Even the part where "Max" says 'Missed it by *that* much" didn't even sound like "him" to me.

And GS in today's world doesn't fit.

It sounds like an awful remake as usual.

The sad part is, had they done this RIGHT, I'd have been the first one in the theatre

I don't mind if they want to make a Get Smart movie, but at least make it in good taste, show respect and keep it faithful to the original series. But foul language, sex, violence, and over the top effects is what passes for entertainment these days. The problem is, there will be enough people who will see this movie that don't have a connection with the original series, and these are the people who will like the movie and think it's funny. That's what the studio is counting on, that's all they care about. The direction the entertainment industry and society in general has taken is absolutely disgusting, god forbid if they would make something decent and in good taste. I refuse to watch the trash that's on TV and in the movies nowadays. The late 70's is when everything started going downhill.

according to www.wouldyoubielieve.com, they refused to contact Mel Brooks or ANYONE from the series, most of whom are still around, about this movie, and what made the show so funny and that's why it's so AWFUL. (they also did that with "THE NUDE BOMB")

And now, they're saying that they DID!

And, would you believe they're already planning a sequel to it!

I also plan on NO ****** plunking down good money for this piece of CRAP!!!!

The remakes have proven they don't work. There have been exceptions like the Brady Bunch, but that was because it made fun of the show, it didn't try and BE LIKE THE SHOW.
