Default George Clooney Ignored Dad's Advice About Staying On 'Roseanne'

A little paternal advice almost cost George Clooney his big-screen career when dad tried to persuade his son not to quit 1980s sitcom Roseanne. Former journalist Nick Clooney told his actor son to sign a contract extension for the show, but the Oscar winner chose to ignore his father's career advice.

In an impressive Time magazine expose on Clooney, his father says, "He was offered a stupendous amount of money to continue to do Roseanne. I was thinking he could build a little nest egg and maybe acting would pay off after all. He said, 'No, I'll be in a cul-de-sac. I'll be that guy, and that's all I'll be.'"

I loved his character Booker. I guess his father was worried he'd be out of work especially after his stint on Facts of Life.

That's really funny, how his father was totally wrong about his son's career. Imagine what would have happened if he had stayed on Roseanne. He'd probably have gotten a much bigger role, maybe a starring credit.

Yea and after Roseanne and before ER, he was on Sisters. Not exactly a top 20 show. He only had a supporting role too.

I don't think they got rid of him, I think he was just a recurring actor during season 1 and didn't come back until season 4 where he was dressed up like a moose for Halloween. Roseanne explained that the producers didn't think that George wasn't anybody special and that was why they put him in a costume. She said that if she could go back to that time she would fire those people all over again for doing that to him. She then went on to say later on, he told her thanks but he was going to move on.

Gotta wonder how the series would've been changed had Clooney stayed on past season one.

He was on Facts of Life too, right? And I don't think he has anything to be sorry for by not continuing on Rosanne. I mean... When you think about it, the man really doesn't have to work anymore at all. I'm sure he has more than enough money to live off of with all the movies he does. Not putting him down or anything because I like George Clooney. I'm just saying....

BTW, I didn't even know he was on "Rosanne"

He was on The Facts of Life because I remember because they had a Facts of Life marathon on Nick@Nite around 10 years ago now and I had taped it. Although the reason he never returned again was because producers wanted to get rid of the mullet he was wearing at the time, he told them the mullet stays and so that was the end of his time on the show.
