I never realized just how arrogant and annoying the character was during these early episodes. I know I enjoyed the character later on when he grew up and was more mature. But sheesh.........you just wanted to knock the crap out of him during these early episodes!

He had too much of damn chip on his shoulder in the pilot episode. That was uncalled for the way he was towards everyone, especially Mr. D. But, I come to realize he was the typical street kid with an attitude who lost both his parents and didn't know how to adapt to a white society.
So I guess in the later years, the white writers had to mellow and mature him so his character could be likable to all races. That's just my take. |

Was it ever discussed how the parents died? Since Mrs. Jackson was the previous housekeeper, I presume she had some kind of terminal illness, since she stated she wanted Mr. D to take care of the boys. I don't recall them stating how the dad died, but it's been so long since I've seen the entire run.

but yeah, i agree with you that willis had a bit of an attitude problem when he was younger. he would talk back at mr drummond and even take it out on little arnold. he can be such an ass hole although he does come across as being smart and not being afraid to say what is on his mind

I just feel they could have mellowed him out without turning him into a nerd.

I always thought it was funny how Willis was this cool kid from the streets at the beginning, and then turned into the whitest character on the show. He was whiter than Carlton on Fresh Prince by the end

I think "preppy" is more the word to describe the later seasons Willis.
