so uh my socks always get holes in them after only a few times of wearing them. i keep my toenails short and i don't do sports or any kind of rough play, so i really don't know what the problem is. it gets annoying that i have to buy new ones so often, always knowing that they're not going to last very long. any tips for keeping socks hole-less?

I suppose you could darn them - or just by cheap socks and when they get a hole toss em.

ahhh, a common but nonetheless troubling problem with many creative and colorful potential solutions:

1 - start wearing socks less often, save them for special occasions ONLY. In fact you could even look into joining a foot-nudist colony where such activity is celebrated as a lifestyle choice.

2 - try Lee's new Aerosol Spray-On Socks - Now Available in Twelve Exciting and Fun Colors! when holes start to appear, simply spray another coat over the affected area!

3 - try making your own socks out of a stronger material; I would suggest a Kevlar-Cermet blend.

4 - start coating your socks with unsavory flavorings, so the gnomes that sneak into your bedroom at night to chew on them will leave your poor socks alone.

What brand of socks are you wearing? I find that store-brand socks are NOTORIOUSLY bad for this. I used to wear mens' Hanes socks for the longest time because they are extremely durable. But they were way too big for me, so I recently switched to wearing ladies' Hanes socks. So far, so good. I don't really like how short the part of crew-cut socks are, but whatev.

I totally HEAR YA!

ALL of mine do the same - doesn't matter what I spend on them. My husband says it's my nails, but I always have a good pedicure and keep them trim. Geez - I feel like a kodiak bear sometimes and it's not my fault!!!

I hardly ever have this problem, and I don't really buy expensive socks. I buy mine a lot at Target. And I walk around in the with no shoes on a lot too. I have some socks that I've had through several winters.

Most of my socks survived the year and a half of hell I put them through. Hiking, trail building, backpacking/...... not exactly your average sock stress-test. Only a few of them have holes. Most are just fine.

Ditto. I'm also pretty big on shuffling along the floor, too, mainly due to my bad knee. My socks are fine.

You are so right Allison. When it comes to wearing socks I tend to grab my honey's socks which are Hanes and they have that grey tip area in the toe area. They last longer. They are big for me, but that is what I use to wear around the house. Ssssshhhhhh, don't tell my boyfriend that I wear his socks. Tee hee.

As for wearing ladies socks when I wear my tennis shoes, I buy the more expensive brands, so they can last longer. I found that the cheaper priced ones do tend to get the holes in them faster. The more pricey ones are thicker and last longer.

I know, right? Yeah, I was wearing that kind of mens' Hanes for a long time. But I thought it looked goofy that I was wearing too-big socks that would flop around when I walked.

I'm thinking I may need to go to a sporting goods store to get *REAL* socks. My ladies' Hanes are fine for now, but who the hell knows how long they'll last. The one thing I don't understand is why the ladies' socks are thick on bottom but thin on top - wtf?

I wear the VERY low-cut socks with my shoes when I'm at work. I now understand why almost nobody I know likes to wear crew cut socks with their shoes.

Awww sweetie, yep that is the problem. I know how you feel, I would buy the cheaper brands thinking "What's the difference?" But there really is. Even for my 6 year old son, I noticed when I bought the cheaper brand, they didn't last long or they shrunk real bad. I now fork over the big bucks for the better stuff.
