'Star Trek' Pushed Back to 2009
Also moving are 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' and 'Tropic Thunder' J.J. AbramsJ.J. Abrams' revamp of the "Star Trek" franchise has been moved off its Christmas 2008 release. According to the media reports, the Paramount produced Muppet Babies version of "Star Trek" will now open on May 8, 2009. According to the industry trade papers, Paramount made the move to maximize the box office potential for "Star Trek," which will now open the week after "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and the week before Sony has scheduled "Angels and Demons." Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto star as Young Captain Kirk and Young Spock, with other key Enterprise casting including Karl Urban as Young Bones, Zoe Saldana as Young Uhura, John Cho as Young Sulu, Simon Pegg as Young Scotty and Anton Yelchin as Young Chekov. "Trek" is far from the only Paramount production on the move. With "Star Trek" moving off of its holiday season release, the studio has shifted David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," which stars Brad Pitt, from Nov. 26 to Dec. 19. Also moving are the Ben Stiller comedy "Tropic Thunder," going from July 11 to Aug. 15. The Renee Zellweger vehicle "Case 39" has gone all the way from Aug. 22 of this year to April 10 of next year. Eddie Murphy's "Nowhereland" will go from Sept. 26 of this year to June 12 of next summer. Finally, Paramount has also set a release date for Martin Scorsese's adaptation of Dennis Lehane's "Shutter Island," now stationed on Oct. 2, 2009. |

That sucks! Now we have to wait more than a year for this movie?
I think moving it to the summer is a mistake. They're going to shoehorn it in between other summer blockbusters which means it has maybe one weekend to get big bucks at the box office before the next summer blockbuster movie comes out. And if the movie doesn't do so well against the competition, Paramount will think the franchise is no good and bail on future sequels. Stupid move. |

I still say they should consider with the original movies. Yes, the last TNG movie flopped, all that means is that it's time for a DS9/Voyager movie. I mean, The Final Frontier was a huge disappointment when it came out (and was viewed as the worst ST movie) but yet the next few installments picked right up. I think the REAL Trekkies deserve more movies with the casts they love instead of some Dukes Of Hazzard/Brady Bunch Movie scenario that camps the original series up and is played to be not taken seriously.

Star Trek has always been dear to my heart. They'd best treat it right, as Berman showed he could not. |
