"Gus and the Net" - dor-ky!

In one of the late-season episodes (that aired on TV Land a couple of weeks ago), the boys get tickets to a carnival, which included a roller coaster.

Turns out that Beaver is kind of afraid of heights, and he's reluctant to go on the roller coaster... he confides in Gus, the fireman, and Gus proceeds to tell Beaver a story from the olden days when it was Gus who was afraid of heights.. then Gus tells Beaver, (paraphrasing) "whenever you find yourself being afraid of high places, just keep saying to yourself, 'Gus and the Net', to remind you that there's nothing to be afraid of'.

Anyway, the boys (Wally, Eddie, Lumpy, Beaver, and another friend of Wally's) get to the carnival... as they're approaching the roller coaster, Beaver's obviously worried... so he starts saying to himself, out loud, "Gus and the Net, Gus and the Net, Gus and the Net"... Wally asks him "what'd you say, Beav?"
to which Beaver replies "Oh, nothing Wally... (under his breath) Gus and the Net, Gus and the Net..."

He keeps repeating "Gus and the Net" during the ride, and then realizes that it's really not that bad, and he enjoys the ride and wants to do it again when it's over (of course, Eddie Haskell faints from the motion of the roller coaster)...


I guess I can see an episode centering around Beaver's fear of heights, but did the writers HAVE to have him keep repeating "Gus and the Net" to himself OUT LOUD?? Couldn't they at least had him THINK the phrase to himself instead of incessantly repeating it?

To me, that was just about as dorky as Beaver got... and he got pretty dorky that last season!

Anyone else think it looked really silly to have Beaver talking to himself like that?

I, too, had occasion to ride on a roller coaster a couple of years ago. I made it a point to say "Gus and the net" all through the ride.

Just saw that ep for the first time. Yes, showing Beav saying it to himself once or twice would heve been enough. Overall, I thought this was a pretty lame episode.

What I thought was amusing - after the roller coaster ride, they get on again right away - no line at all ! If there's one thing I remember about the big roller coasters, it's the wait in line !

The dorkiest and silliest Beaver moment to me will always be Beaver walking around in that Bunny suit...I'll take Beaver's Gus in the Net chanting over that any day.

You got me there! I stand corrected!

Man oh man, that Bunny suit episode had to be Mathers' most embarrassing moment!

One wonders if that might have been an old script that was not used when it was written, perhaps intended for an earlier season... I actually kind of doubt that, since Beaver's character really didn't change that much over the course of the show in terms of his gullibility and naiveté. When he was 13 or 14, he was still talking and acting like an 8 year old..

What I think Is kinda strange Is the fact that Beaver wasn't afraid of heights when he climbed up the billboard and got stuck In the soup cup. But I guess something could of happened since the billboard incident that caused him to be afraid of heights.

Beaver also climbed up the tree to see the birds nest with the girl.

It seemed liked the writer's just tried too hard to get Beaver in public in a bunny suit- Mrs Landers wanted them to already be wearing the costumes when they got there(they couldn't change there), and I think he was going to ride with Lumpy and Wally, but Lumpy's car broke down....

There were a few episodes where Beaver did like girls in the later seasons- The one where Beaver was going to go on a tour of the states, but then found out the girl he liked was going to spend that time with 'Gilly'(Gilbert).
And there was the episode Don Juan Beaver, where Beaver ends up with two dates in one night.

Along with the tree climbing to see the bird's nest, he also climbed trees when he was upset(the episode where Beaver buys Ward the book on how to make milions)

There was also the episode when Beav and Wally babysit the little girl who lock herself in the boy's bathroom. Beaver climbs up the ladder to get to the window.

Remember the episode In season one, when he was missing. Wally and his parents went out looking for him and one of the neighborhood kids spotting him up In a tree. Maybe he was like Eddie, just afraid to ride the Rollercoaster.

That was a funny scene, with Ward yelling at the Beav, and the townspeople gathering around the tree.
