Some of you may remember this case from the second special. I found this article on Newsbank indicating that Maryann Dioria was arrested, convicted and sentenced to what amounted to 15 years. Her accomplice, Chantell Lavero, was still on the run then. I have no idea if she has been apprehended since. They were known as the "kissing bandits"
Here is the article...A.C. KISSING BANDIT GETS 15 YEARS FOR THEFT, CONSPIRACY Press of Atlantic City, The (NJ) - December 16, 1989 Author: W. LEON POPE Staff Writer A prostitute convicted of stealing money from men after slipping them a knockout drug through kisses, was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison. Maryann Dioria, 32, was convicted in August of four counts of theft from a person and conspiracy to commit robbery. The jury acquitted her of robbery. Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Arthur V. Guerrera gave Dioria three five-year consecutive prison terms and one sentence of five years that is to run concurrently. Dioria's attorney, Barbara Lieberman, said she will appeal the sentence. Standing before the judge, shackled and in leg irons, Dioria, who has prior convictions for larceny and prostitution in New York and California, respectively, told the judge "I'm, tired of going to jail." According to Dioria, it was her husband of 10 years who got her "hooked on drugs" and forced her into prostitution. "He had me doing it," she said. "If I didn't do it he would beat me." Dioria, who has two small children, said her life has now changed. "I don't care about the streets anymore," she said. Her pleas, however, did not affect the judge's decision. Guerrera, prior to sentencing, said he was pleased that Dioria showed remorse and had decided to change her ways, but "it comes a little too late." He said Dioria's husband was not the only one to blame for her criminal behavior. "I feel it would have been very easy to say no (to him) and report him to the authorities," Guerrera said. "For whatever reason, you chose this type of life." Dioria, along with another woman, Chantell Lavero , stole money from at least four men who were visiting casinos in Atlantic City. Lavero, who is still at large, has been doing television commercials in New York, Dioria told her attorney. There is a warrant out for her arrest. Dioria had been indicted for the Dec. 14, 1986, robbery of two Long Island, N.Y., men; the April 6, 1987, robbery of a Baltimore man; and the April 18, 1987, robbery of a Virginia man. The first case happened in the Tropicanna Casino Hotel, where she conspired with Lavero to rob a man of $13,000 in cash, $2,000 in casino chips and about $5,000 worth of jewelry. Three of the victims testified that when Dioria kissed them, they tasted something sweet and the next thing they knew they were waking up 14 hours later. The second case happened at the former Elsinore's Atlantis Casino Hotel where she stole about $4,000 in cash and about $2,500 in casino chips from a man. The third incident happened in Caesars Hotel Casino, where Dioria stole about $1,500 in cash and $200 in casino chips. "You created a fear among the populace here," Guerrera told Dioria. Philadelphia Daily News (PA) - May 22, 1987 Author: Associated Press A woman was indicted yesterday on charges of stealing $6,000 from a man who claims she slipped knockout drugs into his mouth while kissing him. The woman, a fugitive known as Mary Ann Dioria , was also charged in another similar April incident, said Barbara Dupre, an assistant Atlantic County prosecutor. The prosecutor said Dioria picked up one of the men in an Atlantic City casino. "The victim says that he kissed her a couple of times. He said that she was crunching something in her mouth. He could taste it. He asked her what it was and she said, 'Certs,' " referring to a breath freshener mint, Dupre said. "Shortly after that, he passed out. He awoke 11 hours later." DYNAMITE! They kissed. They kissed again. The woman was crunching something between her teeth and the man noticed an unusual taste. She told him it was a breath mint. When he awoke in his hotel room 11 hours later, the Baltimore man found that he had been relieved of $2,600 in cash and $3,300 in jewelry. He was so disoriented that he required hospital treatment. A grand jury has charged Mary Ann Dioria , who is believed to be from Miami, with this robbery and another in which a Harrisonburg, Va., man lost $1,300 in cash and $1,500 in jewelry. He was knocked out for 19 hours. Dioria's whereabouts are unknown.
